This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term 'biological diversity' to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world. He died in 2021 and we are very excited to present a selection of his books. Please browse the entire catalogue here on ABE or contact us for instructions on how to get to it. Quarto, laminated boards, spirally bound,89 pp.,colour photographs. Borneo is a geographical entity, a very large island shared between several nations. Most of the collecting and curating effort on Bornean pyraloids in recent decades has been done in Sabah, particularly on and around Mount Kinabalu. It is hoped this Guide will stimulate study in other parts of the island. This is Part 1 of three planned guides. The main group in this part is the family Pyralidae, which together with the Crambidae forms the superfamily Pyraloidea. Members of the Pyralidae are often referred to as âpyralidsâ, and likewise âcrambidsâ for the Crambidae. The term âpyraloidâ used often here refers to both pyralids and crambids ie. all the members of the superfamily Pyraloidea. Part 2 will cover the subfamilies Midilinae; Schoenobiinae; Acentropinae; Crambinae; Scopariinae; Glaphyriinae; Evergestinae; Noordinae and Odontiinae. Part 3 will cover the Spilomelinae; Wurthiinae; Pyraustinae; Cybalomiinae and Heliothelinae.…

Condition: New. 89, 1077 col photos. A4. HB. NEW. . This is Part 1 of 3 and covers the Thyridoidea and the Pyraloidea: Pyralidae sensu Regier, J. O. et al 2012. (Parts 2 & 3 will deal with the Crambidae). The core of Part 1 is a set of 35 high quality colour plates each with a capacity of 35 half images of adult moths. Opposite each plate is a page of corresponding legends. The book is ring-bound to allow it to lie flat on a laboratory bench when identifying specimens. The plates are semi-matt to cut down on reflections. This is an illustrated guide, not a taxonomic monograph. Identification is on the basis of external features only. Many images of morphotypes at or near the species level are included to give a starting point for those wishing to explore further the fauna of Borneo.Includes - Thyrididae: 168 named species, 127 unnamed 'species' (the latter make up 43% of the total of 295 taxa.); Pyralidae: 286 named species, 379 unnamed 'species' (the latter making up 60% of the total of 665 taxa). Subfamilies included are the Galleriinae, Chrysauginae, Pyralinae, Epipaschiinae and Phycitinae. [9789838121620].…

The Euteliinae, Stictopterinae and Plusiinae are clearly defined subfamilies within the family Noctuidae; the subfamily Pantheinae is probably polyphyletic. Bornean representation of each is 73, 89, 15 and 3 species respectively. All these species are illustrated in colour and there are half-tones of most male genitalia and many female genitalia. The characteristics of each subfamily are discussed and for the Stictopterinae an attempt is made to assess the relationships of the genera; each introductory section also includes a review of host-plant preferences and zoogeography. For each species a diagnosis and the geographical range are given and, where known, details of habitat preference and biology. In many instances detailed revisional notes are also presented, several involving species complexes widespread in the Indo-Australian tropics; particular reference is made to the complex of mango pests in Chlumetia. Summary lists are given of the new taxa described (4 genera, 57 species and 6 subspecies) as well as of numerous other taxonomic changes resulting from the extensive revisional work that was called for in the Euteliinae and Stictopterinae. A checklist of all Bornean taxa is presented at the end. 161 pp. + 8 color plates, 339 figs, softcover gr. 8 [18 x 25.3 cm].…

The Notodontidae are a family of medium to large moths related to, or included in, the superfamily Noctuoidea. The Bornean fauna as known at present includes 122 species. All these are illustrated in colour, as are the male genitalia of most of them. The geographical range and, where known, the habitat preference and biology of each species is given. In many instances much taxonomic work of revisional nature was needed: 22 new species and 3 new subspecies are described and numerous other nomenclatural changes are made in an attempt to introduce stability to the classification of South East Asian Notodontidae. Introductory sections deal with family characteristics, both adult and larval, host-plant relationships and zoogeography. A check list is given and the taxonomic changes are listed. Kuala Lumpur. A morphological key to macrolepidoptera families and some subfamilies is presented. The families of the superfamily Cossoidea as recognised by Brock (1971) are treated in detail. The Cossidae (34 Bornean spp.) include a number of important shoot and wood boring pests, and the Metarbelidae (5 spp.) are bark borers. The Ratardidae (3 spp.) are a small Oriental family, rare in collections and possibly allied to the Metarbelidae. The Dudgeoneidae are even less diverse but geographically much more widespread; they have yet to be recorded from Borneo. The Epipyropidae have larvae that are predatory on Homoptera. They occur in Borneo but there is insufficient material to permit a detailed treatment. The Limacodidae (95 spp.) are much more diverse and include a very large number of pest species, almost entirely affecting arboreal or bush crops such as coconut, oil palm, tea, cocoa and coffee. Their larvae, the notorious nettle-grubs or slug-caterpillars, are most striking in form and colour; details of these are given where possible. A tentative scheme of higher classification is presented, based on both adult and larval characters; this led to much revisional work and several generic reviews such as of Cania and Darna. For each species a diagnosis and the geographical range are given and, where known, details of habitat preferences and biology. Summary lists are given of the new taxa described (11 genera, 46 species and 4 subspecies) as well as of numerous other taxonomic changes. A checklist of all Bornean taxa may be found at the end there. Kuala Lumpur. Bornean Noctuidae of the trifine subfamilies Noctuinae (11 spp.) Heliothinae (2 spp.), Hadeninae (32 spp.), Acronictinae (7 spp.), Amphipyrinae (121 spp.) and Agaristinae (14 spp.) are described following an introductory section that considers the possible monophyly of the Trifinae. Features such as the loss of vein M2 in the hindwing, presence of complex hair-pencils in the base of the male abdomen, ornamentation of the bursa copulatrix with band-like signa in the females and presence of a costal process associated with the harpe in the male genitalia are used to suggest relationships between the subfamilies. Biogeographical and ecological patterns in the groups are discussed, and host-plant specialisations noted. Arboreal feeding appears to be primitive, with `higher trifines tending to be open habitat specialists and including economically important genera such as Agrotis, Helicoverpa, Mythimna, Spodoptera, Athetis, Sesamia and Condica that contain many species with large geographical ranges. Many montane taxa, some with bipolar distributions, are also included. The genus Sphetta (1 sp.) is transferred from Amphipyrinae to the Notodontidae, together with the non-Bornean genus Cyphanta. For each species a diagnosis and the geographical range are given and, where known, details of habitat preference and biology. Summary lists are provided of the new taxa described (3 genera, 28 species and 1 subspecies) as well as numerous other taxonomic changes. There is a checklist of all Bornean taxa. 226 pp. + 8 color plates, 404 figs, softcover gr. 8 [18 x 25.3 cm].…

Bornean moths in the noctuid subfamilies Rivulinae, Phytometrinae, Herminiinae, Hypeninae and Hypenodinae are described. Their status and relationships are discussed in an introductory review of the classification of the Noctuidae and in diagnoses of each group. Definition of the Hypeninae beyond a core group of four genera is weak, though one other generic grouping around Mecistoptera Hampson is recognised. Eight genera are only tenuously associated, and a few are set aside for comparison with the heterogeneous array of taxa in the traditional concept of the Acontiinae. The treatment covers 340 species distributed over 51 genera. For each species, a diagnosis and the geographical range are given and, where known, details of habitat preference and biology. Summary lists are provided of the new taxa described (6 genera and 144 species) as well as of numerous other taxonomic changes. A checklist of all species summarises the fauna, including 7 species transferred into the groups treated here, but covered in previous parts. 268 pp. + 510 halftone figs + 9 color plates, softcover gr. 8 [18 x 25.3 cm].…

The second of three volumes covering species historically treated as 'Pyralidae,' but now divided between the superfamily Thyridoidea and the families Pyralidae and Crambidae in the superfamily Pyraloidea. This volume encompasses all subfamilies in the Crambidae, except for the latter half of the Spilomelinae genera, starting with Glycythyma, which will be covered in Vol. Ill (expected in 2025). 452 named species and 386 unnamed morphotypes are included, encompassing all subfamilies of the Crambidae, except for the latter half of the Spilomelinae as mentioned above. Includes subfamilies Acentropinae, Crambinae, Cybalomiinae, Glaphyriinae, Hoploscopinae, Lathrotelinae, Musotiminae, Odontiinae, Pyraustinae, Schoenobiinae, Scopariinae and Spilomelinae. A significant proportion of the species included are economically important pests of rice, fruit, and stored products. This is an illustrated guide, not a taxonomic monograph. Identification is on the basis of external features only. Many images of morphotypes at or near the species level are included to give a starting point for those wishing to explore further the fauna of Borneo. Each Plate has rows of five images across and seven rows down (35 images per Plate). Plate Legends give the current scientific name, the author's name and the year in which the species was described, followed by a variety of data about the taxon and specimen. There are also 6 plates of live specimens showing resting postures. [9789838122085].…

Bornean Arctiidae of subfamilies Syntominae (55spp.), Euchromiinae (2spp.) and Arctiinae (40spp.) are described, with comments on the subfamily classification of the group. Presence of a pair of dorsal glands on the ovipositor is discussed as an arctiid apomorphy. The Ctenuchinae, Euchromiinae, Thyretinae and Syntominae all show this feature and may form a group within the Arctiidae that is defined by fusion of the anterior veins of the hindwing. Genera of the Syntominae are redefined using genitalic characters, and two new genera are described. The tribal classification of the Arctiinae is discussed. A major grouping of species is transferred from Nyctemera to Utetheisa. The genus Aethalida is reviewed. The genus Camptoloma (1sp.) and the Aganainae (Hypsidae) (16spp.) have been included in the Arctiidae in the past and are discussed here, though these taxa are best placed in the Noctuidae. A cladogram is presented indicating relationships of taxa within the Aganainae. One lineage is noted as feeding on Apocynaceae and Asclepiadaceae, and. the other mainly on Moraceae (Ficus). For each species a diagnosis and the geographical range are given and, where known, details of habitat preference and biology. Summary lists are given of the new taxa described (2 genera and 14 species) as well as of numerous other taxonomic changes. A checklist of all Bornean taxa is provided. Kuala Lumpur. 8 [18 x 25.3 cm] [second-hand copy].…

Bomean Geometridae of the subfamiles Oenochrominae (6 species in one genus), Desmobathrinae (45 species in 8 genera) and Geometrinae (209 species in 52 genera) are described. For each species a diagnosis and the geographical range are given and, where known, details of habitat preference and biology. Summary lists are provided of the new taxa described (13 genera, 53 species and 1 subspecies) as well as of numerous other taxonomic changes. A checklist of all species summarises the fauna. In an introductory section the family-group names applied within these subfamilies are listed and reviewed. A commentary on the higher classification is presented, particularly with reference to reorganisation of most of the Oenochrominae into the revived subfamily Desmobathrinae, with tribes Desmobathrini and Eumeleini, and tentative assignation of two of the genera, Naxa Walker (in tribe Orthostixini) and Heteralex, to the Ennominae. The Geometrinae are divided into tribes Dysphaniini and Geometrini, with most currently recognised tribes treated as subdivisions of the latter. All genera and higher groupings are defined as far as possible on the basis of apomorphic (derived) characters. 326 pp. + 427 b/w figs + 12 color plates, br. gr. 8.…

Bornean Geometridae of the subfamilies Sterrhinae (176 species in 21 genera) and Larentiinae (199 species in 56 genera) are described. For each species a diagnosis and the geographical range are given and, where known, details of habitat preference and biology. Summary lists are provided of the new taxa described (9 genera, 55 species and 2 subspecies) as well as of numerous other taxonomic changes. A checklist of all species summarises the fauna. In an introductory section the biogeographic and ecological composition of the Bornean geometrid fauna as a whole is presented within a regional and global context. It constitutes about one quarter of the known Oriental Region fauna. The higher classification of the whole family is reviewed and a tentative phylogeny proposed. For each subfamily, family-group names are listed and some attempt made to resolve classification at a tribal level. Two lineages are recognised within the Sterrhinae, and the tribe Trichopterygini is suggested to bear a sister-relationship to the remainder within the Larentiinae. A final section notes errata in, and addenda to the previous two geometrid parts of the series, with description of two new ennomine species and biological notes on Naxa guttulata Warren, a fern-feeder. 242 pp. + 608 b/w figs + 12 color plates, br. gr. 8.…

The Euteliinae, Stictopterinae and Plusiinae are clearly defined sub- families within the family Noctuidae; the subfamily Pantheinae is probably polyphyletic. 279 pp. + 611 figs of genitalia + 10 color plates, softcover gr. 8 [18 x 25.3 cm].…
