This work, Dickens' last book, was originally issued in wrappers in six parts. At the time of his death he had not yet written the 7th and final part, and to this day the identity of Edwin Drood's killer remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of literature. The copy is unusual in having two pages of advertisements, whereas Smith notes no pages or thirty two pages for the primary binding version. [viii], 190 pp. Bound without the final leaf of ads and the publisher's catalogue that some copies have. With thirteen plates by Fildes, including the vignette title, and a frontisportrait of Dickens, "Engraved by J.H. Baker, from a Photograph taken in 1868 by Mason & Co." Handsomely rebound in late 19th-century half polished tan calf, over tan cloth boards. Spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Spine with red and blue morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Spine is slightly darkened. Some minor rubbing to corners. Some of the plates have tiny chips in the fore-edge margin from previous stab-holes.
