Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. "First published in 1959…" to the copyright page. Like new, appears unread, and not remaindered. Interior is clean, unmarked and free of any names or plates. Boards (hardcover) are clean, small "ding" to the top corner of the rear board. Bright silver titles to spine. Clipped dustjacket is lightly bumped and rubbed to extremities with a handful of very small chips and tears. Handful of small abrasions and stains to the front wrap. Now protected in archival brodart jacket. One of Norway's most accomplished explorers Nansen proposed locking a ship in the pack ice and letting it drift across the polar seas and then… gave it a go. Lord Edward Shackleton was the son of famed explorer Ernest Shackleton. Photographs (illustrator).

First Printing of the First UK Edition. A Very Good plus copy in blue cloth boards with a hint of sunning to the top edges and a previous owner name on flyleaf in a Very Good plus unclipped dust j with light wear to the extremity and a damp stain along the bottom edge of the rear panel. Fridtjof Nansen was the first to cross Greenland and later succeeded in proving that an ice locked ship would drift with the ocean current as he crossed the Arctic Ocean. Edward Shackleton, himself no stranger to heroics of polar exploration, greatly admired Nansen and here writes affectionately and authoritatively of his Arctic hero.
