Henry Francis du Pont was such a consummate artist, and the canvas was his beloved garden at Winterthur, du Pont's home from his birth in 1880 until his death in 1969. The sumptuous masterpiece he created in Wilmington, Delaware, is now open for the public to enjoy, but for years it functioned as a private horticultural laboratory where du Pont, primarily known as a visionary collector of American decorative arts, experimented as much with the landscape as with individual plant species gathered from the far corners of the globe. In "The Winterthur Garden, author Denise Magnani, curator of landscape at Winterthur, offers an intimate portrait of both the man and his environment. Magnani's text and additional essays are breathtakingly illustrated by landscape photographer Carol Betsch's lush pictures of this impeccably preserved national treasure. This newly issued paperback edition also features a new foreword by Winterthur's current director, Leslie Greene Bowman." ; apart from presence of writing on the title page, the condition is VG/VG. [While other books online have been read but still classified as new, this book was never read.] Martin Amis's Time's Arrow is a short, unsettling novel told entirely in reverse, following the life of a Nazi doctor backward from death to birth. It uses this reversed chronology to expose moral horror by making atrocities appear, on the surface, as acts of creation rather than destruction. The central figure is a man known by several names?most notably Odilo Unverdorben or Dr. Tod T. Friendly?who is eventually revealed to have been a Nazi doctor involved in the Holocaust. Very profound, insightful story. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly. Signed by Author(s).

Full tan cloth with matching end papers and gold titles. A tight copy with sharp corners and spine ends and no markings by a previous owner. The jacket is bright, crisp and price intact. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 8vo (23.5 cm), XI, 238 pp. Publisher's black cloth boards, title panel in blue and gold to upper board. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. A detailed study of the creative interplay between mathematics and physics in the work of Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695), developed from the author's doctoral dissertation. The book traces the development of Huygens' work on time measurement and mechanics, showing how mathematical reasoning and physical insight were mutually constitutive in his approach to natural philosophy. The first half follows, in a sequence of focused studies, the conceptual and mathematical steps leading to Huygens' invention of the isochronous pendulum clock: his analysis of gravity and uniformly accelerated motion (including engagement with problems posed by Mersenne and Riccioli), his treatment of centrifugal force in De Vi Centrifuga, his investigation of curvilinear motion and the cycloid, the mathematical theory of evolutes, and his broader conception of curvature in relation to the work of Apollonius, Newton, and Leibniz. The second half situates these developments within their wider scientific context, addressing priority disputes with contemporaries, the reception of the Horologium Oscillatorium (1673), and Huygens' role in the emergence of applied mathematics in the seventeenth century. A notable methodological feature is the author's close engagement with unpublished manuscript sources, including calculations and marginal workings not reproduced in the Oeuvres complètes. Illustrated with reproductions of Huygens' manuscript figures, drawn primarily from the working papers held at the University of Leiden. Inscribed by Author(s).

This representative collection of Macfarlane's writings includes his first book, Mountains of the Mind, winner of the 2004 Somerset Maugham Award; his acclaimed work of linguistic preservation, The Lost Words; and his latest publication, Firefly. From perilous peaks to ancient woodlands and the subterranean world, Macfarlane's explorations of nature and culture have received widespread popular and critical acclaim. The Lost Words, championing terms such as acorn and bramble which were dropped from the Oxford Junior Dictionary due to lack of use by children, inspired fundraising which placed a copy in every Scottish primary school and British hospice. "Swimming down a tidal cave in Wales, [Macfarlane] saw at the end of it 'a vast white boulder. shaped roughly like a throne', undocumented, unexplained. A cave in Cumbria, in northern England, was framed by two great guard-stones with a holly tree across the entrance, just like the entrance to Moria in Tolkien. But what he sees is not fantasy. Nor is his whole project to 're-wild' our vocabulary. It is also to stretch our shrunken imaginations, even (he hopes, in the end) to 'irrigate the dry meta-language of modern policy making'. He is the great nature writer, and nature poet, of this generation" (Shippey). Holloway (2013) and Ness (2019) are both first trade editions, each published the previous year in a limited edition by Quive-Smith. The Lost Words and Firefly are signed on the publisher's bookplate. Tom Shippey, "Why You Can't Say Where You Are", Wall Street Journal, 5 Aug. 2016. Together, 11 works, octavos and a quarto. Many illustrations, including colour and photographic. Original bindings with dust jackets (Lost Words and Firefly issued without jacket). Barcode sticker on jacket rear panel of Lost Spells. Overall, a fine set in fine, unclipped jackets.
