Taylor and Lowell were very close friends and colleagues. They both attended Kenyon College where they were roommates and studied under Allen Tate and John Crowe Ransom.

The third poem in the book is entitled: "For Mary McCarthy." McCarthy and Lowell were close friends and neighbors in Castine, Maine. A splendid association.
