Organization of Calculations for an Automatic Machine; Examples; Bibliography; Index. EXCERPT: PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION - In revising the text of this book for a second edition, it has been my intention to preserve its character as an introduction to numerical analysis for those who want to know about numerical methods for the purpose of applying them in practice, when actual numbers take the place of the literal symbols of an algebraic formula. The main change from the first edition is in Chapter VII on the numerical integration of differential equations, which has been largely rearranged and somewhat extended, particularly in the treatment of equations with two-point boundary conditions. I have also included a section on Whittaker's 'cardinal function' in the theory of interpolation, and an account of a method, due to Wilkes, of handling the Choleski method of matrix factorization which, in my view, converts this from a method for specialists (as it seemed to me when the first edition was written) to a practicable method for the occasional user. The treatment of quadrature formulae of the Gauss type has been extended, and a number of other sections have been added or revised . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

"Calculation originally, and over a long period, meant numerical calculation â" the repertoire of arithmetical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and procedures such as extraction of square roots, which could be applied to arbitrary numbers: integers, fractions, and rational, irrational and transcendental numbers. Subsequent developments of such procedures into powerful methods for the solution of general mathematical problems in numerical terms came to known, in English, as numerical analysis."
