Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Original black titled brown cloth with ornate Arabic calligraphy to the front 17x27cm. (16)pp prelims including blanks, 216pp with 41 b/w photos, maps, floor plans, and diagrams including the folding b/w Map of the Oasis in the back pocket. Covers near fine, gently rubbed and bumped to the extremities, and slightly faded to the spine. Interiors near fine with map neatly folded. This copy belonged to Dr Harry Williams Hazard (1918-89) with his "In Memoriam" bookplate to the ffep. Hazard was known for his Atlas of Islamic History, a briefing for the American Geographical Society on the Arabian Peninsula, and his work on the Crusades. With Aramco widening its areas of interest, it sent scientists and social scientists further into the field to study environment, disease, social and cultural life. Among them was Federico Vidal, a Harvard educated anthropologist who visited Al Hasa for the first time in 1950 on a malaria eradication mission. He covered the Oasis' social relations, religious identities, political economy, water resources, and agricultural practices. Recognising the area's potential for food production, he highlighted major challenges to be addressed including encroaching sand, rising salinity, and mismanagement of water resources. He wrote this work during October 1953 to May 1954. In 4 Parts, he covers General and Geographical; Communities (classification and general characteristics, garden villages, forts, and the towns of Hofuf and Al Mubarraz); and Economy (springs, land, irrigation (Siah and Mugharraf), date culture and gardening, livestock, arts and crafts etc, with appraisal).
