Octavo, two volumes, frontispiece inserted in volume I, endpaper maps, title pages printed in brown, publisher's brown buckram, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge gilt, fore-edge untrimmed. First edition, first printing. Copy 682 of 1050 numbered copies signed by Roberts. A historical novel by one of America's finest historical novelists that tells the story of the American Revolution from the perspective of a young, educated Loyalist (Tory) from Massachusetts. It was a bestseller at the time of its publication in 1940 and praised for its meticulous research and for challenging the traditionally one-sided portrayal of the war. "A superb love story -- an extraordinary piece of characterization -- and a unique background, handled with Roberts' masterful technique . This is his best book" (Kirkus Reviews, 1 November 1940). In 1957, two months before his death, Roberts received a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation "for his historical novels which have long contributed to the creation of greater interest in our early American history." A fine copy in torn and chipped plain glassine wrappers and lightly worn paper slipcase. (#178217). Signed.

Hardcover (in Slipcase). Condition: Fine. Grant Wood (Frontis) (illustrator). Limited Edition. Signed by Author. A beautiful set of the Limited Edition in the original slipcover. Signed by Roberts on the limitation page at the front of Volume 1 and numbered #477 of 1,000 (plus 50 unnumbered copies). This novel was revolutionary for its time because Roberts presents a favorable treatment of the Tory position during the American Revolution -- an approach that resulted in critical reviews and angry letters (see Bales, 1993, p. 77). While the novel covers the whole war, it highlights the often overlooked movement of the theater to the southern states following the British defeat at Saratoga. As a result, it both continues the story from Arundel and Rabble and Arms and provides an alternative perspective from the Patriots side in the earlier novels. What all three share in common is what Bales describes as "a Roberts narrator [who] sees that his duty is to tell the truth about war and the politicians who furthered it" (p. 76). Note: I have a large selection of Kenneth Roberts books and related materials. Contact me if you are looking for something in particular. Size: 9" -11" - Small Quarto (Sm. 4to). 848 pages. 2-volume set (complete). Item Type: Book. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Hardcover bound in brown buckram over boards with beveled edges. The initials KR on an open book device are embossed on the front covers with the title in bright gilt on the spines . The books are lacking (as usual) the fragile cellophane wrappers in which they were originally issued. The label on the slip case is clean. Some of the edges have split, but have been been reglued to stabilize them and prevent any further damage. The bottom left corner of the rear board of the slipcase has taken a bump, crumpling the corner. The top page edges are in bright gilt. The side page edges are a combination of deckled (rough cut) and uncut. Illustrator: Grant Wood (Frontis). Quantity Available: 1. Letter. Condition: Fine. First Edition. 2-page typed letter signed by Kenneth Roberts on his letterhead to 'Mr. Sisson', dated February 5, 1941, discussing an evident error Sisson has called to his attention in a manner that evidently nettled Roberts, relating to his portrayal of the weather during the Siege of Boston in his novel OLIVER WISWELL, which Roberts acscribed to Frothingham's SIEGE OF BOSTON. Roberts adds a 3-line holograph postscript noting that 'Frothingham's source for the cold of April 18th was Gordon's AMERICAN WAR.' Also has content relating to annotations in historical fiction, changes to the text, and typographic errors in OLIVER WISWELL. A fine example (with mailing creases).
ROBERTS, Kenneth. Oliver Wiswell. Original cloth, dust jacket. New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1940. First edition. Presentation inscription on title page, "For Barton W. Currie, with every good wish, Kenneth Roberts, December 5th, 1940." Laid in is a 4 pp. A.L.s dated Oxford, Dec. 14, 1933 to "Dear Barton [Currie}." Asks Currie to wait until spring to send a book for signing and writes, "I'm reserving a little language for the ass who did a review of Rabble for the Herald-Tribune . and displayed his coruscating metality by mentioning 'those two great historical novels, Vanity Fair and Carlyle's French Revolution' . If that doesn't take the cake, cake is no longer in use." Roberts continues by complimenting Currie for an article in the American Book collector and giving bibliographical information on Arundel. In the original mailing envelope. With a typed postcard signed to Barton Currie, dated January 27, 1947 telling him that books had been sent. A fine copy with a few small closed tears to d/j in a custom cloth slipcase. Signed.
