Over the past decades, the geological ~tudy of ophio lites has provided a wealth of insight into lithospheric processes and has proved to be an indispensible prerequisite to interpreting geophysical and other investigations of the crust underlying recent oceans. The Oman Ophiol ite offers the most complete and structurally undisturbed sections of the oceanic crust in vast, clean exposures. It is, therefore, most fortunate for the scientific community that Mhd. Kassim, Director General of Minerals and Dr. Hilal Al Azri, Director of the Geological Survey, took upon themselves the task of organizing in Oman an international meeting on ophiolites. Having planned for an attendance of only 100 to 150 persons, the logistics of the organizing committee were put to a severe test by th~ 300 participants who eventually arrived from 27 countries. The 14 field trips, most of which were conducted twice, provided the participants with an excellent introduc tion to the geology of Oman, the ophIolite sequence, and re~ated phenomena.

This significant work presents findings from Southwest Missouri State University's expedition to Dhofar led by Professor Juris Zarins in 1990-95: "The importance of this study stems from the fact that there are only a few comprehensive reports about the archaeology of Dhofar. Indeed [it] further authenticates the important and influential role in the region played by Dhofar for multitudes since early prehistory". The expedition followed work for a documentary by Nicholas Clapp and George Hedges with Ranulph Fiennes in 1990, about the search for the lost city of Ubar. First sponsored by the Oman International Bank, the Government took over in 1991 when Sultan Qaboos established the National Committee for Supervision of Archaeological Survey. Building on its findings Sultan Qaboos University joined excavations at Al Baleed in Salalah from 1996 as part of a master plan to restore and develop the site as a visitor park. In 2016, low international oil prices made the Omani budget deficit US$11.5 billion, or roughly 19% of GDP, yet, the budget deficit was contracted to 13% of GDP in 2017 as the Sultanate cut its subsidies. This State has scarce foreign assets and is issuing debt to shelter its deficit. Consistent with the above, this thesis aspires to ascertain the impact of such volatility on macroeconomic variables - 'Government expenditure, inflation (CPI) rate, aggregate investment expenditure, money supply (M2), employment rate, and aggregate household consumption expenditure'- in the Sultanate of Oman, scoping from 1990 to 2016.The thesis employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model that succeeded in the methodology suggested by Pesaran and Shin (1999). Pesaran, Shin, and Smith (2001) have developed a version of the ARDL model as a substitute co-integration method called the error correction version. This method's employment is essential to test the presence of long-term correlations between the variables of interest.
