Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. A set of 13 adjoining colour sheets from the major geological mapping project of Oman's mountains. Each approx 76x102cm folding down and stored facing its Explanatory Notes in a clear plastic wallet 17x25cm. The Explanatory Notes are in card wraps with colour photo from the area covered to the front, and index map to the back. Page counts vary from 33pp to 76pp English text (translated from French) including several b/w photos, drawings, sections and maps. They are all ex-ETH Bibliothek Zurich with several stickers and ink stamps including "Ausgeschieden / Withdrawn". Otherwise the maps are very good, neatly folded with some creasing and spotting, a couple slightly worn with closed fold tears; the booklets very good or better; with tears to some wallets. The Omani Ministry of Petroleum and Minerals (MPM) engaged the French Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) to perform the survey during the 1980s-90s. Its primary outputs were a 1/250K series covering the whole country in 28 sheets, a 1/100K series covering parts of northern and southern Oman (approx 30 sheets, including this set), and a 1/50K series for selected high priority areas in the north (East View Geospatial). This set includes 13 sheets published in 1986 of the approx 18 covering the Oman mountains and part of Batinah as follows: Yanqul (NF40-2C); Ibri (NF40-2F); As Suwayq (NF40-3A); Barka (NF40-3B); Sib (NF40-3C); Rustaq (NF40-3D); Nakhl (NF40-3E); Fanjah (NF40-3F); Masqat [Muscat] (NF40-4A); Quryat (NF40-4D); Bahla (NF40-7A); Birkat Al Mawz (NF40-7B); and Samad (NF40-7C). The remaining sheets (not included here) apparently followed in the 1990s. They are based on fieldwork done during 1982-84. BRGM's Resident Manager and Head of Project was J. Caia. BRGM was joined by MPM geologists, and supervised by MPM's Omar Al Amin (geologist) and Mohammed Kassim (Director of Minerals). Its specialists in Orleans backed up the fieldwork with studies (Foreword / Abstract). The boldly colour blocked geology is laid on contemporary topographic base maps prepared under the direction of the British Ministry of Defence in 1983 (for Yanqul, As-Suwayq, Barka, and Masqat), and by Hunting Surveys for the Omani Ministry of Defence in 1984 (for Ibri, Rustaq, Nakhl, Fanjah, Quryat, Bahla, Birkat al Mawz, and Samad). The work follows Ken Glennie's comprehensive geological study of the mountains for Shell during the late 1960s into the 1970s, and is contemporary with related work by the Geological Survey of Japan and University of Bern, and major ophiolite surveys by USGS around Muscat-Ibra (1981) and Open University along the northern coast (1986). (8), (8)pp English and Arabic texts each fronted with the same tissue guarded full-length colour portrait of Sultan Qaboos, 18pp colour maps, plans and graphs captioned in English and Arabic. Rare, with Worldcat and Library Hub recording 6 locations between them (Sultan Qaboos Library, LoC, Georgetown, NGA Research Center, Exeter, Freie Universitat Berlin), along with editions for 1977, 1996 and 2006. This was the Omani Development Council's contribution to the Fifteenth National Day Anniversary: "a graphic account of the fifteen years of achievements. With few exceptions, the maps presented here would be blank were they to illustrate the situation in 1970 --- It is also intended to be a working tool to those who share in preparing or making decisions concerning the location of various construction projects and facilities" (Foreword). The texts include information on geography, population, administrative areas, and a full-page table of development indicators for 1970-84. The Atlas contains 14 full-page maps including: 2 World maps (shipping and air communications; distribution of Oman's oil exports); the Arabian Peninsula; and 11 thematic 1/3M maps of Oman (post and telecoms; power generation and desalination; social services; education; health; commerce and industry; petroleum, gas and minerals; agriculture and fisheries; communications; Governates and Wilayats; and physical). A double-page spread contains 4 Plans including the Capital Area, Muscat, Salalah, and Muttrah and Ruwi. Another double-page spread contains GDP time series graphs for several sectors of the economy.

Trade paperback. Presumed first edition/first printing. Text is in both English and Arabic. English portion has 46 pages. Arabic portion appears equivalent. Color portrait of Sultan in each section. Information No. 28/2006. From Wikipedia: "Women in Oman were historically excluded from the forums of everyday life. But with the dispersal of Omanis in the early 1900s and their return in the early 1970s, a more contemporary population of Omanis that were influenced by the British colonial values during their time abroad have slowly challenged many traditions of gender segregation. Women now pursue careers and professional training, slowly moving from their previous household confinement to the public sphere. In Oman, 17 October is celebrated every year as the Omani Women's Day with various pro-female events Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman, is an Arab country in the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Holding a strategically important position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the nation is bordered by the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest, and shares marine borders with Iran and Pakistan. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The Madha and Musandam exclaves are surrounded by the UAE on their land borders, with the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman forming Musandam's coastal boundaries. From the late 17th century, the Omani Sultanate was a powerful empire, vying with Portugal and Britain for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. At its peak in the 19th century, Omani influence or control extended across the Strait of Hormuz to modern-day Iran and Pakistan, and as far south as Zanzibar (today part of Tanzania). Historically, Muscat was the principal trading port of the Persian Gulf region. Muscat was also among the most important trading ports of the Indian Ocean. Oman is an absolute monarchy. The Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said is the hereditary leader of the country since 1970. Sultan Qaboos is the longest-serving ruler in the Middle East. Unlike its resource-rich neighbors, Oman has modest oil reserves, ranking 25th globally. Nevertheless, in 2010 the UNDP ranked Oman as the most improved nation in the world in terms of development during the preceding 40 years." Very good. No dust jacket. Cover has slight wear and soiling.
