Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. George Booth (illustrator). First Edition. Book very good and dust jacket in good condition. The dust jacket does curl up some on the bottom edge on the front and darkened on the top edge front and back. The book has lots of extras and a great addition to anyone who enjoys Mr. George Booth's illustrations. They really are cute. The extras are a letter to Lucretia J. Weed (related to the publisher?). A letter entitled SG Alumnae Fund, copyright 1993 George Booth with an occasional apology to E. Gorey A Weekend Missourian , friday, Oct. 19, 1984, The artist (Mr. George Booth) uses his mother as a model (so cute)for some of his cartoons , George Booth's rendition of his mother, Norene playing a fiddle with a dog and cat. A large article with a cartoon picture of his mother and a black and white photo of George and his mother. The New York Times December 1987 has a large full page cartoon by George Booth. The Booths were a transient family moving 23 times but never leaving Missouri. George was born in Cainsville, Mo. and spent most of his time in Martinsville and Fairfax where his father was a teacher. Mrs. Booth was 81 in Oct. 1984, she made her home in Princeton, MO. Mr. Booth stated he was the only cartoonist who knows the difference between a Jersey cow and a Holstein cow. Not Booth's only unusual characteristic; he has an assortment of iron wheels. The collection started several years ago , after a reporter asked him if he had any hobbies. Glancing around his backyard in Stonybrook, N.Y., Booth noticed an iron sewing wheel and told the reporter he collected iron wheels. A number of newspapers printed the story, and it became nationally known that he collected iron wheels. Since it wasn't exactly true, Booth had to begin a collection to lmake the story accurate. Now he proudly boasts that his collection numbers 30 to 40 wheels. He saw a huge iron wheel from a steam engine sitting out in the middle of a pasture here in Missouri and he got a very warm feeling inside, he said. His collection has even been sent to the Smithsonian Institute. Booth hauled them to Washington, D.C., when he was invited to speak to the Smithsonian Club. He couldn't fly to the capitol because his wheels activated the alarm on the metal detector at the airport. Booth can't remember wanting to do anything except cartooning. His first cartoon was printed in the St. Joseph Gazette when he was 9 years old. His career was boosted while he was in the Marine Corps. During World War II and the Korean War, Booth worked on Leatherneck Magazine, the Marine Corps publication. His most memorable experience in cartooning was when he first sold to The New Yorker in 1969. Booth now considers himself successful enough that he can pick only the jobs that he wants to do. "Twas not always thus," Booth says. Mrs. Booth attended Stephens College from 1921 to 1922. She met her husband while she was waiting tables, and he was washing dishes. I enjoyed this book very much and all the articles because I am from Bethany, Mo which is close to where George Booth was born in Cainsville, MO and I live very close to Martinsville and Princeton , MO. I truely enjoyed George's cartoons and I hope someone will enjoy this book as much as I do. Signed by Author(s).
