A near fine copy in a very good dust jacket with light chipping to the top of the spine. Inscribed on the half-title, "For Melba Bennett a friend of Phil's, Jessamyn West." With Bennett's bookplate on the front pastedown. Bennett was the founder of the Palm Springs Historical Society and the Palm Springs Garden Club. She also wrote a book about Robinson Jeffers.

This was limited to twenty-six sets for the world, this is from number 6. We believe Mr. Jefferson may have been the binder. Beautifully bound in a heavy patterned leather, highly detailed gilt framing of both covers, additional large rose illustration center of front cover. This decoration contains minisule tinting or onlays of the leather. All corners and head and foot of spine showing some wear, rubbing. No board is showing. Spine section has raised cording that is also tooled. Interior endpapers also highly detailed leatherwork with gilt, moire paper fep. Tip-in autograph sheet with numbering and half-title. hand tinted title page, three repeating illustration plates showing matching illustration in hand-tint, sephia, black and white - all retain protective tissues. Then original title page {Smart and Stanley, Publishers} with copyright verso dated 1903. Prologue for three pages - unnumbered. Contents I-III, Illustrations Main Text 1-78, then three repeating illustration plates as previously described, 79-112, three more plates, 113-142, three plates, 143-192, three plates, 193-334, finishing with a hand-tinted colophon, three blank sheets. All edges are bright gilt, hand sewn head-bands. A fasinating book for the binding alone. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author. Limited Edition.

La première édition a été publiée chez le même éditeur en 1852. Reliure en plein maroquin bordeaux, dos à cinq nerfs, date dorée en queue, gardes et contreplats de papier coquille, encadrement d'une dentelle dorée sur les contreplats, premier plat de couverture conservé, tête dorée, double filet doré sur les coupes. Quelques rousseurs, plus prononcées sur certains feuillets, une petite restauration au coin supérieur droit page IX-XIV sans atteinte au texte, une annotation au crayon pages 116 et 139, habiles restaurations en tête et en pied du mors supérieur. Exceptionnel et intime envoi autographe signé de Richard Wagner à un ou une mystérieuse dédicataire : « Hierbei sollst du meiner gedenken, denn alles habe ich ernstlich gemeint. R. W. » [Tu te souviendras de moi, car tout cela je l'ai pensé sérieusement]. Cette émouvante confidence manuscrite à la tonalité éminemment personnelle, de surcroît sur le plus important de ses écrits théoriques, se distingue radicalement des expéditifs « Zur Erinnerung » écrits par le compositeur sur ses partitions d'opéra, ou des petits mots qu'il avait coutume de distribuer aux mécènes à l'issue de ses représentations. Nous n'avons pu référencer aucun autre exemplaire d'Oper und Drama avec envoi passé sur le marché ou dans une institution. L'autobiographie et la correspondance du compositeur révèlent cependant l'existence de deux dédicaces sur cette uvre majeure. Un premier envoi est adressé à Theodor Uhlig sur le manuscrit original du texte, avec une citation autographe inspirée de Goethe. Le second et seul autre envoi mentionné dans une lettre de Wagner aurait été réalisé sur la présente édition pour Malwida von Meysenbug. S'il n'est pas impossible que notre exemplaire du « livre de tous les livres sur la musique », selon Richard Strauss, soit celui-ci, le style et la teneur de l'envoi permettent de légitimement attribuer cet exemplaire à un dédicataire plus prestigieux encore. * UN MANIFESTE « TRÈS SOLIDE » Wagner achève en février 1851 l'écriture d'Oper und Drama. Ce « livre très solide » - tel qu'il le décrit dans une lettre à Franz Liszt, énonce les principes révolutionnaires du Leitmotiv et de Gesamtkunstwerk, utopie politique et esthétique d'un drame musical synthèse des arts. Le texte fait partie de ses Zürcher Kunstschriften, trois essais fondateurs composés durant ses années d'exil suisse, avec Kunstwerk der Zukunft, et Die Kunst und die Revolution. Il y expose la forme qu'allait prendre son célébrissime Ring, futur « festival scénique en un prologue et trois journées », et inclut ses réflexions sur la relation art et société, ainsi que ses théories sur l'avenir de l'opéra. En 1868, il décide d'achever la composition de cette monumentale tétralogie et travaille simultanément à la seconde édition d'Oper und Drama, qui paraîtra en fin d'année 1868 - et non en 1869 comme l'indique la couverture. Elle ne différera finalement de la précédente que par sa nouvelle préface - le peu de modifications apportant ici la preuve de la permanence de sa vision musicale et artistique près de vingt ans après sa première rédaction. Il ne cessera de la défendre avant de trouver la manifestation ultime de son grand uvre à Bayreuth en 1876. Cette seconde publication corrigée et enrichie d'une préface repensée, s'inscrit donc dans le processus créatif de l'artiste en élevant sa réflexion au rang de manifeste politique et musical, comme en témoigne la dédicace aussi intime qu'énigmatique de notre exemplaire. La prééminence de l'ouvrage pour le compositeur, l'absence d'attribution explicite de l'envoi, le tutoiement, et la teneur du message confirment l'importance d.
