Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. pp. (viii), 234, (vi). , A-P . Roman and Italic letter. Woodcut device to title of Ss. Peter and Paul with Papal arms in between, historiated, floriated and grotesque woodcut initials, typographical ornaments. Light age yellowing, the very rare marginal spot. A very good copy, crisp and clean, in eighteenth century French calf, spine with gilt ruled raised bands, gilt ruled in compartments, richly gilt with large fleurons to centres, red morocco label gilt lettered, a.e.r. covers scratched. Important first edition of this major work on missionary theory by the great Discalced Carmelite Monk Tomas de Jesus, (Diego Sanchez Davila) one of the most important figures of the Discalced Carmelite movement, a work of great influence in the establishment of missions throughout the New World. Thomas was named Provincial of Casilla in 1597 and founded another desert Monastery at Las Batuecas shortly after. During this time he was invited by the Carmelite fathers of the Italian congregation to join a missionary expedition to the Congo, however he preferred to remain in solitude in his retreat. Shortly after however, on rereading the first chapter of the foundation work of the order by St. Theresa D'Avilla, he had a profound change of heart. He made a vow to work on the conversion to Christianity of all those who were outside the Church, and wrote to his Italian confreres to inform them of his availability to travel anywhere in the world. With this goal he returned to Rome. The African mission had not materialised so whilst in Rome he wrote this treatise in which he formed the view Carmelites should give themselves to the missions as it was entirely within the spirit of contemplation that founded the order. He developed the idea that Monks and Solitaries, due to their rigorous training were most qualified for this apostolic mission. He developed these thoughts in a second work 'De procuranda salute omnium gentium' which, together with this, would serve as one the chief works used in the formation of missionaries for centuries especially after the creation of the congregation for the propagation of the faith. "An attempt in this direction (creating new missionaries) had been made soon after the Council of Trent, but was not followed up. The pope, struck with the missionary zeal of the Carmelites, consulted Thomas of Jesus as to the best means of bringing about the conversion of infidels. This religious, in his works "Stimulus missionum" (Rome, 1610) and especially "De procurandâ salute omnium gentium" (Antwerp, 1613), laid down the disciples upon which the Holy See actually instituted and organized the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda." Catholic Encyclopaedia. "His purpose was not only to prepare missionaries to Evangelize the indigenous peoples of the Americas, but also to provide them with arguments to refute the convictions of any kind of unbeliever. His focus on missionary activity anticipated the creation of the church's missionary office, the congregation for the propagation of the faith." Jo Eldridge Carney 'Renaissance and Reformation, 1500-1620: A Biographical Dictionary.' An excellent copy of this important first edition. Not in BM STC It. C17th or Alden.

Couverture rigide. M. Lecky, dans son "History of the Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe", 4ème édit. 1870, t. I, p. 297, le regarde comme ayant été peut-être le fondateur de l'interprétation rationaliste de la Bible, "the school of Biblical interpretation of which he was perhaps the first founder." Nr. 61. - Antonius Sanderus [Anton Sander] (1586 -1664) studied theology for some years under Malderus at Louvain, and Estius at Douai, and was ordained priest at Ghent. For some years he was engaged in parochial duties, and combated the Anabaptist movement in Flanders with great zeal and success. In 1625 he became secretary and almoner of Cardinal Alphonsus de la Cueva, later becoming canon, and in 1654 penitentiary at Ypres. After three years, however, he resigned this office to devote himself entirely to scientific, and especially to historical studies. He soon found himself compelled to claim the hospitality of the Benedictine Abbey of Afflighem, since he had reduced himself to absolute poverty by the publication of numerous works. He combined high intellectual gifts with great zeal, and left behind forty-two printed, and almost as many unprinted, works. The most important are the following: "De scriptoribus Flandriae libri III" (Antwerp, 1624); "De Gandavensibus eruditionis fama claris" (Antwerp 1624), "De Brugensibus eruditionis fama claris libri II" (Antwerp, 1624); "Hagiologium Flandriae sive de sanctis eius provinciae liber unus" (Antwerp, 1625; 2nd ed., Lille, 1639). A general edition of these four works appeared under the title: "Flandria illustrata" (2 vols., Cologne, 1641-44; The Hague, 1726). - Antonius "Sanderus signed a contract for the publication of this large work with Hondius in Amsterdam in the summer of 1634. In 1641, however, Hondius sold the rights of the book to Johan & Cornelis Blaeu. Blaeu intended to publish also a third volume, with the topographical description of the French part of Flanders, but this was never printed. Sanderus explains in the preface the etymologies of some old terms, which he had used in the text. This is followed by a general description of the geology and history of Flanders, with interesting details on the laws, language, politics, etc. There is a second edition published in 1732 and a third in 1735 (both printed in The Hague by Chr. van Lom), which contain, however, less plates". (Forum Rare Books). (www.kbr.be). - Der Kupfertitel von Bd. 1 beschnitten und altaufgezogen. Beide Titel verso mit kleinem Doublettenstempel. The rare second Latin edition of the account of Schouten and Le Maire's important voyage. Schouten and Le Maire's expedition was sponsored by a group of Dutch merchants known as the Australian Company, a consortium in competition with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The expedition's primary aim was to search for Terra Australis from the east, and it was the last seventeenth century voyage to do so. In entering the Pacific from the Atlantic in 1616, Schouten and Le Maire sailed to the south of the Straits of Magellan, naming Cape Horn and discovering a new navigable passage to its south. Striking out westward across the Pacific in search of Terra Australis, they sailed through the Tuamotu archipelago, and were the first Europeans to visit the islands of Tonga. The expedition charted a substantial part of the coasts of New Ireland and New Guinea, before eventually reaching Batavia. The subjects of the maps and plates are: Map of the world in two hemispheres;Map of the South Sea;Plate of Porto Desire or Leeuwen Eylandt;Map of Tierra del Fuego, etc.;Plate of the Indian sailing canoe;Plate ofCocos Eylandt, etc.;Plate of the meeting with the Indian kings;Map of Nova Guinea;Plate ofHoornse Eijlandt Isle de Hoorn. Large, very rare, hand-coloured copy of Willem Blaeu's famous wall map of the Americas, which is considered "one of the most influential maps of America ever made" (Burden). The map is based on the latest explorations and shows everything known at the time about the American continent, as well as the north and south pole, which are included on two inset maps. As the wall map was in great demand, but expensive and difficult to transport, it was also printed by various French and Italian publishers for the local market. Like Blaeu's edition, the French and Italian editions are very scarce, as it is highly unusual for wall maps from this period to survive. We have only been able to trace 4 other copies of the present edition in sales records of the past hundred years, of which only 1 is also hand-coloured.Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) first published the wall map in 1608, together with similar maps of Asia, Africa, and Europe. He spared no expenses for this project and hired Hessel Gerritsz (1580-1632), a great cartographer in his own right, to both design the maps and research the latest sources exhaustively, in order to create the most accurate depiction of the continents possible. Although the Americas were drawn too wide due to the inadequate methods of determining longitude at the time, the shapes and most of the coastline are already very well defined. Central and South America were drawn according to Portuguese and Spanish sources, and "Nova Scotia" on the Atlantic coast was based on the voyages of Samuel de Champlain and Pierre Gua de Monts from 1604. After the first edition in 1608, the wall maps were subsequently published in 1612, reissued in 1624 by Hendrik Hondius, and in 1655 by Nicholas Visscher. The Hondius reissue, or the third state, included changes to the Strait of Magellan based on Le Maire's findings from his expedition in 1615-1617.The map has been beautifully decorated with cartouches and illustrations. The cartouche in the lower right tells how the New World was discovered, and is flanked by the figures of Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. Below are four roundels containing the portraits of the four circumnavigators: Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Thomas Cavendish, and Olivier Van Noort. The Atlantic features a beautiful depiction of the King Philip III of Spain riding a sea chariot, supposedly on a figurative visit to his New World possessions, and in the Pacific Poseidon with his wife Amphitrite and son Triton can be found, amidst battle ships and sea monsters. Elephants, rhinoceroses, camels, and ostriches roam the continent. Some copies of the map include a decorative border with illustrations of native people, and sometimes also a textual border with descriptions, which are not present here. These borders were engraved on separate copperplates and were not always included.Blaeu's wall maps were first printed in Italy in 1646, probably by Stefano Mozzi Scolari (1598-1650) in Venice, which were based on the third state from 1624. The present copy was engraved by Pietro Todeschi (dates unknown) around 1670, and published in Bologna in 1673, probably by Giuseppe Longhi (active 1620-1691), who had worked on similar projects with Todeschi before. It closely resembles the Venetian edition, which was most likely used as the model. Todeschi's edition is, however, clearly recognisable because of the misspelling of Mar del Nort as Mar del Noi, and the fact that California has been drawn as an island. It is the only edition known to do so.The map is somewhat browned and stained, the surface has faded, the work has been professionally restored: it has been reinforced on the back, the colouring has been retouched, some of the losses have been filled in, the work has been toned and varnished. Otherwise in good condition.l Burden II, 433; Schilder, Monumenta cartographica Neerlandica V, pp. 195 and 197; cf. Burden I, 156 (Blaeu edition). A hand-coloured engraved wall map, printed on 4 joined sheets.

Hardcover. Condition: gut. München u. a. 1702-1710. - LITERATUR: Phillips/L. 3457-3462, 3471. - De Backer/S. VII, 766. - F. Wawrik, Berühmte Atlanten S. 172ff. (Die bibliophilen Taschenbücher Nr. 299). - Vgl. Sabin 77606. - First edition and very comprehensive copy of Scherer's opus magnum, an important geographical handbook ahead of its time in terms of cartography. 7 parts in 3 volumes. With 7 engr. frontispieces and 177 ( of 189) engr. plates and maps (107 of which folding). Contemp. pigskin over wooden boards, dated 1710, with 5 (of 6) clasps. - Only here and there minimally stained, few plates and text leaves tanned, 2 inner hinges with small wormtraces in places, 1 inner hinge only partly slightly going. One clasp of volume II missing. Beautiful and clean, well-kept copy, the plates in dark, detailed impressions.

Wittemberg, Mevius, 1654. 4to. In contemporary full vellum with yapp edges. Title in contemporary hand to spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light soiling and miscolouring to extremities. Upper outer corner of front board with loss of vellum, showing the wooden boards underneath. Internally very nice and clean. (22), 692, (70) pp. + frontispiece. The rare first edition of Quenstedt?s rather ambitious attempt to account for all theologians throughout the history of the world. We have not been able to trace a single copy in the trade. A second edition was published in 1691. ?Johannes Andreas Quenstedt was the Thomas Aquinas, so to speak, of Lutheran Orthodoxy, the last great representative. To anyone following his arrangement of material and noting his exegesis it will become evident that he was fair and meticulous in his work and drew from the best which his precursors had to offer. Preus, Robert D. (1961) ?The Vicarious Atonement in John Quenstedt,?, Concordia Theological Monthly: Vol. 32, Article 8, 78-97, 79.) ?One might say that Quenstedt's [Opus] killed systematic theology in the period of Lutheran orthodoxy as Michaelangelo killed Renaissance art by the unexcelled quality of his work. Quenstedt's lifework is so big, so complete, so concise and systematic, and so excellent that no later Lutheran ever came close to equalling it." (Robert Preus in "The Theology of Post-Reformation Lutheranism," Volume I, p. 62.).

"This famous history was written in Venice in 1540, where the author was then living as a catholic refugee - he had left Sweden in 1526. In it, the Gothic romantic conception of Sweden as the "vagina gentium", the idea of Jordanes, 6th century chronicler of the Goths, is developed in a history of Swedish kings both at home and abroad leading the migrating peoples. The conception had alredy been adopted by mediaeval Swedish historians and was the leading ideology of Swedish patriotism in the 17th century when the text was translated into Swedish (1620). The book was posthumously published by the author's brother Olaus Magnus, who dedicated it to Pope Julius III as well as to the Swedish Crown Prince Erik."
