La trilogía La Orestea dramatiza la muerte de Agamenón, al regresar victorioso de Troya, a manos de su esposa Clitemnestra, y la venganza matricida de su hijo Orestes, junto con el destino ulterior de éste. Se trata de un tema antiguo situado dentro del marco general de los retornos de los héroes aqueos después d…e la conquista de Troya. De hecho, es tratado por Homero en varios pasajes de la Odisea. Cuando este mito pasó al área cultural doria se enriqueció notablemente: fue el poeta lírico Estesícoro quien introdujo elementos nuevos, abriendo posibilidades dramáticas y dotándole de una dimensión moral de la que carecía en Homero. Finalmente, Esquilo lo dramatizó, añadiendo una nueva dimensión socio-política, sirviéndose de la trilogía dramáticamente trabada que él mismo había descubierto; estructura a la que el dramaturgo acomoda la puesta en escena del pensamiento político, moral y religioso que, como educador de su pueblo, buscaba transmitir: el triunfo del orden de Zeus, representado por la justicia, sobre el desorden y el caos moral y social provocado por el exceso o hybris; de la razón sobre los instintos y las oscuras fuerzas irracionales. La dramatización de este ?programa? consiste, por consiguiente, en la puesta en escena de los mecanismos de la justicia de Zeus y del reconocimiento por parte del hombre, a través del dolor, de los mismos. La obra culmina en el tribunal del Areópago con un canto al orden social y político que representa la incipiente constitución democrática de Atenas.
