He was the only surviving son of George III who did not pursue an army or navy career. A Whig, he was known for his liberal views, which included reform of Parliament, abolition of the slave trade, Catholic Emancipation, and the removal of existing civil restrictions on Jews and Dissenters. Herbert Hill 1750-1828 was Educated at St. Mary Hall, and Christ Church, Oxford; he was Chancellor of the Choir of Hereford Cathedral, chaplain to the English factory at Lisbon (1792-1807) and rector of Streatham (1810-28). C1890. Prince George, Duke of Cambridge (George William Frederick Charles) 1819-1904 was a member of the British royal family, a male-…line grandson of George III and cousin of Queen Victoria. The Duke was an army officer by profession and served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces (military head of the British Army) from 1856 to 1895. He became Duke of Cambridge in 1850 and field marshal in 1862. Deeply devoted to the old Army, he worked with Queen Victoria to defeat or minimise every reform proposal, such as setting up a general staff. His Army became a moribund and stagnant institution. Its weaknesses were dramatically revealed by the poor organisation at the start of the Second Boer War. Edward Stanhope 1840-1893 was a British Conservative Party politician who was Secretary of State for War from 1887 to 1892. Provenance: From the family of autograph collector Emily Mary Rose Lee (1869-1949), wife of Colonel William Crawford Walton (1864-1937). Emily was the daughter of William Lee, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow from 1874 to 1886, and granddaughter of John Lee (1779-1859), Principal of Edinburgh University from 1840 to 1859. John Aislabie 1670-1742, of Studley Royal, near Ripon, Yorkshire, was a British politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1695 to…1721. He was of an independent mind, and did not stick regularly to the main parties. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time of the South Sea Bubble and his involvement with the Company led to his resignation and disgrace.William Clayton 1650-1715 was an English merchant and politician from Liverpool.He was the son of Robert Clayton of Fulwood, near Preston, Lancashire and followed his uncle Thomas Clayton to Liverpool, where he became a successful tobacco and sugar merchant. After serving as a common councillor from 1685 he was elected Mayor of Liverpool for 1689-90, and then became an alderman of the city. In the Parliament of England, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Liverpool from 1698 to 1708. After the Union with Scotland, he was elected as a Liverpool MP to the new House of Commons of Great Britain from 1713 to 1715. Size 95m x 60mm. George Baillie 1664-1738 was a Scottish politician who sat in the Parliament of Scotland from 1691 to 1707 and in the British House of Commons from 1708 to 1734.Condition is good. Lightly age toned. Signature and the rest of the handwriting are still very clean and legible. A Very Good copy. An original document issued by the War Office and signed by Charles Grey as "Howick." In the document, Grey signs that the Paymaster General is to return a portion of treasury funds used by the "53rd Foot," also known as the 53rd Regiment of Foot. General Charles Grey (1804-1870) was a British army officer, politician, and secretary. He was one of the sons of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845), the latter of whom was also known as Viscount Howick from 1806-1807, and Mary Ponsonby. Henry Grey, 3rd Earl Grey (1802-1894) was the younger Charles's brother. In 1820, Grey joined the British Army as a sub-lieutenant. He later commanded the 73rd Regiment of Foot from 1833-1842. As a politician, Charles served as a member of the British House of Commons and the Executive Council and Special Council of Lower Canada. Notably, Charles also served as a private secretary to his father, to Prince Albert from 1849-1861, and to Queen Victoria from 1861 until his passing in 1870. Signed by Author(s).

Three Original Documents allowing Joseph Seaton Aspden of Preston to be many ranks in Lancashire, including being appointed one of the Earl's Deputy Lieutenants, Captain of the Preston Volunteers, and Major in the local Miltia. Each document is signed by Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of De…rby. All dated from 1805 to 1819. The three documents came from an Archive of correspondence from the family of Richard Assheton Cross 1st Viscount Cross. Joseph Seaton Aspden was a close friend and fellow lawyer in Preston with William Cross the father of Richard Assheton Cross. Royal Preston Volunteers (RPV), formed in March 1797. Among his officers were Joseph Seaton Aspden and William Cross. The three of them were lawyers and would become the owners of the first three houses built on Winckley Square. The Napoleonic Wars resulted in the raising of voluntary regiments nationwide. Each was formed locally. Members paid a subscription and bought their own equipment. Their primary goal was to defend the locality. Edward Smith-Stanley,c 13th Earl of Derby 1775 -1851, of Knowsley Hall in Lancashire was a politician, peer, landowner, builder, farmer, art collector and naturalist. [June 8, 1779 - Egremont and Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts] An original 246-year-old Revolutionary Era deed for the sale of land between father and son, both named John Kellogg. They were John Kellogg (1726-1789) and Major John Kellogg (1755-1834), a soldier during the war (he als…o named his son John Kellogg, and that son did the same). Single sheet. 14 ½ x 8 ¾ inches. In fair condition. Toned, creased at folds with 3 folds repaired to verso. Some loss of paper at folds, some separations. Still presentable. See images. Signed and sealed by John Kellogg Sr., witnessed and signed by Samuel Whiting (1761-1832) and his father, Dr. William Whiting Jr. 1730-1792, (twice, once as justice of peace). Docketing to verso, dated November 13, 1779, signed by Moses Hopkins (1751-1838), Registrar. Dr. William Whiting Jr. (1730-1792) was born in Norwich, Connecticut and studied medicine in Hartford. In 1765 he moved to Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and set up his medical practice, becoming the leading physician in the county. His true interest however, was politics. He represented Berkshire County in the General Court and the Provincial Congress and was commissioned as a Justice of the Peace in 1775. The population of Berkshire was not happy with the governor appointed justices, taxation and wanted them to cease prosecuting poor farmers who were in debt. The farmers, mostly former Revolutionary militiamen, would frequently attack courts, forcing them to close. William Whiting continued working as a justice despite numerous threats against him and was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of Berkshire County in 1783. He was one of very few men of the elite to side with the farmers and wrote several pamphlets soliciting judicial reform and nonviolence. Ironically, his efforts to help the farmers made him a target for the judiciary and the elite which he was part of, while being the chief justice made him the natural enemy of the rebels. Late in 1786, hundreds of Daniel Shays' Regulators attacked Dr. Whiting's home and in February 1787, he was arrested for seditious libel (for the pamphlets he wrote defending the same people who attacked him at his home). He was stripped of his judgeship, convicted by the court he once presided over and sentenced to 7 months imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of 100 pounds. His signatures are rarely seen. Mai 1864 in Ply…mouth, New Hampshire) war ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller der Romantik. Mit seinen oft allegorischen Romanen und Kurzgeschichten erlangte er Weltgeltung. Nathaniel Hawthorne entstammte einer alten Puritanerfamilie. Sein Ururgroßvater John Hathorne (erst Nathaniel fügte dem Familiennamen ein 'w' zu) war einer der Richter bei den Hexenprozessen von Salem 1692. Schon aus diesem Grund beschäftigte sich Hawthorne in seinen Romanen und Kurzgeschichten oft mit der Welt der Puritaner Neuenglands. Hawthornes Geburtshaus in Salem, Massachusetts Grab auf dem Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord Sein Vater fuhr als Erster Offizier zur See und brachte 1796 zusammen mit Kapitän Jacob Crowninshield, der später Politiker wurde, aus Kalkutta den ersten Elefanten nach Amerika. Der Vater starb im Jahre 1808 auf einem Schiff vor Suriname an Gelbfieber. Hawthorne wurde daher von seiner Mutter und deren Verwandten aufgezogen, die ihn vor der Welt behüteten. Da er schon als Kind durch seine erzählerische Begabung auffiel, wurde er auf eine Privatschule geschickt. Von 1821 bis 1824 studierte er am Bowdoin College in Maine, wo er in die akademische Verbindung Phi Beta Kappa aufgenommen wurde. Hawthorne war mit dem Dichter Henry Wadsworth Longfellow und dem späteren Präsidenten Franklin Pierce befreundet. Anfängliche Misserfolge als Schriftsteller zwangen ihn, Anstellungen beim Zolldienst und in der Postverwaltung (1839-1841) anzunehmen. Später konnte er von seiner schriftstellerischen Arbeit leben, was in Amerika vor ihm nur Washington Irving und James Fenimore Cooper gelungen war. Ab 1840 gehörte er zum Kreis der Transzendentalisten und schloss Freundschaft mit George Ripley, Henry David Thoreau und Ralph Waldo Emerson. 1841 verbrachte er ein halbes Jahr in der sozialutopischen Siedlung Brook Farm, die von George Ripley kurz zuvor gegründet worden war. Seine Zeit in der Kommune verarbeitete er später in dem Roman The Blithedale Romance. 1842 heiratete er die ebenfalls dem Transcendentalist Club zugehörige Malerin Sophia Peabody, mit der er bis zu seinem Tod eine glückliche Ehe führte und drei Kinder hatte. Sie lebten in den ersten Jahren ihrer Ehe im noch heute als Museum zu besichtigenden Haus The Old Manse. 1850 schloss er eine kurzlebige Freundschaft mit Herman Melville, dem Hawthorne ein großes Vorbild war (Moby Dick ist Hawthorne gewidmet). Von dem Briefwechsel, den die beiden führten, sind nur die Briefe Melvilles an Hawthorne erhalten geblieben. 1852 schrieb er eine Wahlkampfbiographie für seinen Schulfreund Franklin Pierce (Mitglied der Demokratischen Partei). Nachdem Pierce ein Jahr später Präsident wurde, verschaffte er Hawthorne einen Posten als amerikanischer Konsul in Liverpool. Dort blieb Hawthorne vier Jahre, verbrachte weitere anderthalb Jahre mit seiner Familie in Italien, und kehrte schließlich nach Concord zurück, wo er im Haus The Wayside lebte. Auf dem Weg zu einem Erholungsurlaub in den White Mountains starb er am 19. Mai 1864 in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Am 23. Mai 1864 wurde er auf dem Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord beigesetzt. Hawthorne wird mit Herman Melville und Edgar Allan Poe zur ?dunklen? amerikanischen Romantik gezählt. Seine Romane und Kurzgeschichten sind von einem tiefen epistemologischen und metaphysischen Skeptizismus geprägt. Seine Themen sind oftmals die dunklen Seiten der Seele wie der Gesellschaft: Sünde, Schuld, Strafe, Intoleranz und Entfremdung. Schon zu Lebzeiten wurde Hawthorne als Begründer einer genuin amerikanischen Nationalliteratur kanonisiert. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. [Original Civil War Muster document from the U.S. Colored Troops, with a related print from Harper's] 16 x 26 cm. Dated Aug. 12, 1863. Document states that William Cribbs (unknown-1/1/1865) was mustered into service as a Private in company D of the 6th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops for a servi…ce of three years. Signed by Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Rob" Beath (1/29/1839-11/25/1914) who lost his leg during the battle of Chaffin's Farm (New Market Heights) where 32 men entered the fray and returned with three, marking the greatest average company loss of any troops in the course of the Civil War. The Document is also signed by First Lieutenant John B. Johnson (1845-unknown). Document has a handsome illustration of a Union soldier with a bayonet and a tent with an American flag in the background. Grouped with the Muster Card is a woodcut engraving labeled "Negro Recruits at Charleston" from Harper's Weekly, April 1, 1865 (11 x 18 cm). The engraving shows a group of dignified Black Union soldiers welcoming a group of harried and barefoot ex-slaves. Private William Cribbs listed in this document died at U.S. General Hospital at Point of Rocks from Chronic Diarrhea. Charleston was one of if not the largest slave entry port. Nearly 3 out of every four enslaved African entering through Charleston. It was the only American city during the Antebellum period to have a majority slave population. After the city's capture in 1865, it was put under guardianship by the 21s Infantry of the U.S. Colored Troops, which was mostly made up of locally recruited formerly enslaved persons. Freed persons and runaway slaves from across the countryside flocked to the city, many of which joined up with black regiments there. Camp William Penn, Chelton Hills, Pa. was the first and largest federal training camp dedicated to African American Troops during the Civil War. Approximately 11,00 freedmen and escaped slaves trained there to make up 11 regiments. The Sixth regiment traveled the furthest of these units, participating in the Richmond - Petersburg Campaign and Sherman's Carolinas' campaign. The Sixth was also a vital component of the Battle of Chaffin's farm, during which is had a 57% casualty rate. Of the 18 Metals of Honor awarded to black soldiers during the Civil War, fourteen were earned by soldiers who fought at New Market Heights, two of which were from the 6th Regiment. Original menu signed by artists and writers. 4pp. Short tear.André Salmon(Paris, 1881-Sanary, France, 1969):Writer, poet, and art critic André Salmon was an impassioned supporter of modern art and a central figure in the early historiography of the French avant-garde and Cubism in particular.Son of an engraver a…nd sculptor, Salmon was raised in a left-leaning family with little means and did not receive a formal education. In 1897 Salmon's family moved to Saint Petersburg, Russia, where André worked as auxiliary attaché for the French embassy and absorbed pre-revolutionary Russian culture. When the family returned to Paris in 1902, Salmon found employment in a bank. A year later, after meeting the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, Salmon gave up his post and embraced the bohemian lifestyle of Montmartre and Montparnasse, frequenting the café La Closerie des Lilas and contributing to the newly founded journal Le Festin d'Esope. Salmon, Apollinaire, and the poet Max Jacob were also part of the so-called bande à Picasso (Picasso's gang), that included artists, writers, and critics who gravitated around Picasso's studio at the Bateau Lavoir. In 1907 Salmon himself moved into the Bateau Lavoir, where he was one of the few to witness the production of Picasso's 1907 Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (Museum of Modern Art, New York). Between 1909 and 1910, he worked as an art critic for the newspaper L'Intransigéant; initiated a new column, "Le Courier des ateliers," in the newspaper Paris-Journal; and wrote for the periodical Gil Blas. First page with wafer seal of municipal executive of Amsterdam (Sigillu Oppidi Amstelredamensis) and blind embossed duty stamp (Clein segel 3s 1784). The same embossed stamp to the second and third leaves. Light browning, a very well-preserved document. F…old-lines. An intriguing document showing a family's ultimately failed attempt to have Helena Martina van Brussel (1757-1829), then in her late twenties, committed to an insane asylum. The authors note, "having been mentally troubled for more than half a year and being completely insane, the most far-reaching excesses have been committed". They believe that if she is not committed to an asylum, "the greatest calamities are to be feared". The dossier starts with a summary of the case, dated 3 January 1785, signed by an Amsterdam city alderman (H.W. Hasselaar) and another official named Douwes. It is noted where the case is recorded in a special register. After a blank second page, the third to fifth pages have submissions, from the said Douwes, and another signed by members of the family, Gerrit Bonn, Anna van Brussel his wife, Helena's father Paulus Theodorus van Brussel, and her mother Claasiena van Grenhuis. A separate note is added here at the bottom outer corner. On the facing page are medical practitioners' statements, from Hendrick van der Ven, 24 December 1784, and Cornelius Franciscus Nuyens. surgeon, 29 October 1784. Van der Ven states that he gave Helena Spanish fly (cantharidin) between 15 and 20 October - only making her symptoms worse. Nuyens (1750-1800) had had her under his care for eight weeks with no improvement and states that she must be committed. Happily, Helena Martina van Brussel may eventually have escaped the asylum. She was to die unmarried, in the pretty North Holland village of Kortenhoef, at the age of 71.
