Loosely based on Ferenc Molnar's 1924 play Testor, which had previously been adapted to film in 1931 as The Guardsman, about husband who tests his wife's fidelity by disguising himself as another man, which she sees through immediately, and tortures him accordingly. A good, if short, biography of the well-known mountaineering Episcopal priest & pastor of several churches, including Holy Trinity Church in Harlem. Lightly soiled, but vg. No dj. Very scarce. ALONG WITH LARGE ORIGINAL black & white PHOTOGRAPH of Nichols, and signed by him, "Affectionately Yours Harry Peirce Nichols", on the mat, to which the photo is glued. Silver print, size: 10 3/4" x 11 7/8". The image is of Nichols sitting atop a rock formation on a mountain top, location unidentified (hazy back ground). Nichols, who appears to be in his 60s or early 70s, is dressed in climbing clothing, with hat on his head, & is pointing beyond the left of the image with outstretched arm, tilted slightly upwards. He is looking towards a focal point, as if to another mountain. The Rev. Nichols' mountaineering credentials are as impressive as his ecclesiastical ones: from 1881 a member of Appalachian Alpine Club. One of the founders & a president of the American Alpine Club. Founder of the Harvard Alpine Club. "For more than sixty years he climbed in the White Mountains", climbing Mount Washington over 250 times. Charles Wilcox's great work on the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia devotes several pages to Nichols' account of being one of the first American climbers in those high & rugged mountains west of the Canadian Rockies. Hardcover. Condition: Good. On offer is the 1929 diary of Herbert Stevens, a 72-year-old retired engineer in Buffalo, New York. This small diary covers the historically fascinating period of January to December 1929, encompassing the onset of the Great Depression. It is an excellent resource for an urban historian, painting an intimate picture of the life of a retired couple right at the time when things would begin to go terribly wrong for both Buffalo and the American economy. Stevens's lengthy diary entries describe his life in rich detail: "Has been a cool day and I have stayed inside a good share of it and had a time getting fire to burn enough to keep us warm . . . " [Feb 10, 1929] "This AM was up early as did not feel [ ] good took a walk later did some few things around the house also got some things stood in need of and also did a lot of fixing up. " [Apr 13, 1929] "As Eva went in town to see about some things was gone [ ] most of day and and didn't get at real work til home again about 8: 30 then spaded a while also few things needed care and later lissened [ ] a nice hour of music . . . " [May 20, 1929] "Mostly cool today Up early for me and did a lot of small things needed doing also went to store after [ ] for eats - though got only a few myself but rather gave Edward (possibly his youngest son Edward b 1914) a five dollar bill to use . . . " [Aug 9, 1929]Stevens was born in Evans, New York, in 1857 and lived in Buffalo with his wife, Eva. Together they raised a family of 4 children. A City of Buffalo Directory indicates that Stevens was an engineer. He passed away in 1938 at the age of 81, and his wife passed away the same year. At the onset of the Great Depression, Buffalo, New York, had 573,000 inhabitants, making it the thirteenth-largest city in the United States. Because of its location and the proximity of the Erie Canal connecting it to New York City, Buffalo had become an industrial powerhouse. However, with the Great Depression came severe unemployment, especially among working class men. President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal relief programs operated in full force, but the city's days as a great industrial center had passed and the population declined precipitously after World War Two, never to recover. The diary measures 5.25 inches by 2.75 inches and contains 121 pages. The covers and pages are in good condition. The binding is intact but the spine is cracked. Large archive including portfolio containing 20 watercolor studies, several signed, usually c. 10" x 12" or less, and 15 pencil sketches, usually c. 6" x 8" and 4" x 6" often dated and with pencil notes for future color reference; 8 further sketchbooks with some 100 watercolor or pencil studies; 2 albums of newspaper exhibition reviews; file of testimonials, documents and letters concerning Russian purchases; printed invitation cards, gallery and price references; lists of important patrons; extensive collection of some 280 mostly silver gelatin prints by the artists (180 c. 10"x 8", plus 100 c. 6"x 8" or less, several with pin holes to corners); plus 3 albumen photographs signed and captioned on the verso Frank Mason Good. Condition generally very good, sketch books with ordinary wear, foxing to just some of the works on watercolor board, some photographs with edge wear, all deserving proper archival preservation. § Archive of the British watercolourists Albert and Mary Stevens. The couple were popular and prolific Victorian landscape painters who experienced commercial success with regular joint exhibitions of their studies of the French Riviera, Swiss Alps, Italian Lakes and romantic English scenery. Unknown as photographers, the couple also exhibit a pictorialist skill in taking images that they would later use as inspiration for their paintings. At their Cannes and London galleries their patrons included an impressive group of European royalty and aristocracy, notably Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and the Empress. The archive is informed by Russian correspondence that discusses the selection, delivery and purchase of works. Albert Stevens (1823-1906), son of a London auctioneer, married Mary Jane Ellen Draper (1866-1947) of Liverpool in 1884. Albert taught Mary to paint but she was quick to exhibit a distinctive talent and aesthetic of her own. Both artists exhibited all over the Britain, including several times at the Royal Academy. The couple had one daughter Dorothy Mary Stevens, also an artist, who appears in several of the photographs. The archive is interesting for documenting both the artists working methods with field sketches, watercolour studies, and photographs, and their commercial success with correspondence, exhibition announcements, and two albums of fastidiously compiled press clippings. Pictorially and historically, the photographs are perhaps the most interesting aspect of this archive. The majority of these images were taken by the artists but their collection is supplemented by purchases from various professional studio photographers, notably 'N.D. Photos. Environs de Nice' in the south of France, and Alinari's 'Lago d'Orta' from Italy. Several photographs of course record Stevens family members on picnics or other rural excursions. Signed albumen photographs by Frank Mason Good are also captioned by him on the verso: 'Shiplake. A Willow Walk', 'A Dorset Lane', and 'Ent To Stokesay Castle'. F.M. Good was a Victorian landscape photographer renowned for his English and Middle-Eastern work and the presence of these rare signed images in the Stevens collection demonstrates more than a casual interest in photography. The Stevens' pencil captions are found on the verso of many of their photographs; these titles typically a mirror of those found describing their watercolour paintings: 'In a Garden at Cannes', 'Olive Trees' and 'Coastal Works. Antíbes', 'Etude Artistique' and The Mule Path Mentone', 'Near Costabelle', waves and breakers, 'Japanese Anemonies' and Iris, 'Gypsy Camp', a fishing boat at 'Port Aven Brittany', 'Washerwomen in Stream', 'Menaggio Lake Como', and 'Piano near Lugano'. One image shows Mary Stevens on a mule with a folding stool and paint box en route to some picturesque rocky location; another shows Albert rather precariously perched on a tabletop at work at his easel outdoors. 'D.S' (Miss Dorothy Stevens) sits in a boat at 'Shiplake on Thames'. Other studies include two girls 'Watching the Woodpecker', girl with a parasol, feeding the chickens, tree blossom, children in a country lane or at play, glacier views, and Swiss cows in a meadow. Flooded landscapes and rugged beach studies all contribute to the pictorial narrative. Specifically British landscapes depict 'Doone Valley Devonshire', 'Arundel Castle', 'Porlock in Somerset', and two views of 'Warwick Castle'. The Earl of Warwick was one of the couples noted collectors and later their student. Included with the correspondence is a teaching testimonial from the Earl and a letter sadly informing them of the destruction of one of their 'beautiful drawings' in the great fire at the castle. As a patron and as a student the Earl is in good company: Her Majesty Queen Mary, H.R.H Princess Beatrice, The Queen of Denmark, Princess Phillippe De Bourbon, Princess Christopher of Greece, Princess Stephanie of Belgium, Earl Howe, Countess of Lonsdale, Duchess of Roxburghe and Duchess of Westminster were all avid collectors. A 1904 letter from Princess Beatrice of Saxe Coburg also sought private lessons. The Stevens were particularly favoured by the Russian royal family: they enjoyed royal patronage from The Empress Marie, The Grand Duchess Cyril, The Grand Duke Michael, The Grand Duke and Duchess George, and The Emperor and Empress. 'The Czar of Russia has honoured Mr. Albert Stevens and Mrs. Mary Stevens by purchasing several of their water-colour drawings. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens are well known at Cannes, where they winter every year'. - Evening Standard [29 September 1913). Russian correspondence include 12 originals, several from Baron Stoeckl, Chamberlain to the Tsar, writing from the Russian Embassy in London, Paris, Crimea and St. Petersburg confirming the Emperors wishes; shipment, selection, returns, titles with prices, and payment for paintings destined for the Palace at Livadia. Ephemera. Condition: Fine. The original drawing, captioned "He knew, but too late, what had happened . . . ." in Famous Fantastic Mysteries (October 1952). Stevens (1884?1960) took up illustrating pulp magazines during the Second World War, when he was a couple of decades older than most beginning artists. He retired in the 1950s, after just over a decade working as a pulp illustrator. This image shows his mastery of two difficult techniques: foreshortened perspective and ghostly images. In this drawing to illustrate the reprint of a 1930s Sax Rohmer novel, the main figure's hand and pipe loom large, close to the viewer. Across the center of the image, a ghostly bat flies in from the left. Stevens (who is usually credited as "Lawrence", using just his first name) accomplishes this effect by changing the density and direction of his pen strokes. Stevens's work is scarce on the market, perhaps because he almost never signed his drawings. This one was anonymous until Dave Smith of Fantasy Illustrated suggested Stevens could be the artist which enabled your cataloger to find the magazine where this drawing was published. 5-3/8 by 7-1/8 inches (drawing) on a larger board. [Images of the Burger Court and Reagan-Era Senate] 129 hand drawn images of the United States legislature, Supreme Court, and the notable trial of John Hinckley, Jr. Almost all images are dated and copyrighted by the artist at the lower margin. Dimensions of the sketches are mostly 17.5 x 23 inches. One smaller group of images are 17.5 x 14 in. The artist Joan Andrew (b. 1941) sketched these Courtroom and Senate scenes in Prisma colored pencil while in attendance for use by the national news media. Joan Andrew was employed by the Washington Post and CNN as a sketch artist from 1981-1984; illustrating the proceedings in the United States Supreme Court, U.S. Senate, and United States District Court. Andrew is a graduate of the University of Colorado, and an award-winning painter, sculptor, and weaver. Andrew's 129 sketches include: 57 sketches of Supreme Court Justices and advocates. The Justices are depicted in groupings, from two to all nine together, on the bench, hearing arguments between 1981-1983. Justices pictured include: Chief Justice Warren Earl Burger Thurgood Marshall (First African American Justice); Sandra Day O'Connor (First Female Justice); John Paul Stevens; William H. Rehnquist (future Chief Justice); Lewis F. Powell, Jr.; Harry A. Blackmun; Byron Raymond White; numerous advocates before the Court. 24 Sketches Documenting the Trial of John Hinckley, Jr., for his Attempted Assassination of President Ronald Reagan. Hinckley was famously found not guilty by reason of insanity during the trial. 48 sketches of the U.S. Senate from 1981 - 1984, some with Vice President George Bush, presiding. This original pen-and-ink drawing appeared as a tailpiece on page 29 of the December 1953 issue of Universe Science Fiction illustrating a story in de Camp's Pusadian series. It is signed on the mat by Le Sprague. The image is a rare example of male nudity in science fiction pulps. In this case, a naked man, drawn from the back, lunges toward a vision of a woman. In this drawing, Stevens used a scratchboard technique, painting ink onto a piece of cardstock and then scratching the surface to reveal white paper below. The image is 7-1/4 by 5-1/4 inches on a slightly larger piece of paper. The illustration appeared in Universe Science Fiction without a caption. The image is mounted to a piece of mat board with a wax-paper overlay. The image is captioned in pencil with various production notes in the lower margin.
