From Introduction: Once upon a time, on an annual basis from 1903 to 1910, the state of Florida was projected into naitonal and even international prominence by a single winter event -- the automobile racing tournaments held on the Ormond-Daytona beach. And as benefits any story that begins with "Once upon a time," fairy tales about these events begin to unfold, evolving from fact into fancy as the years rolled by. It didn't happen right away. For years historians were content, when recalling the annual tournaments, merely to recite the many world speed records that were set on the beach.
