    Original copper-engraved miniature map (9.5 cm x 13.5 cm, 12 x 17 cm overall) of the Kingdom of Ormus (Modern day southern Iran, Bahrain, Persian Gulf). Latin text to verso. Petrus Bertius (14 November 1565 13 October 1629) was a Flemish philosopher, theologian, historian, geographer and cartographer. Bertius published much in mathematics, and historical and theological works, but he is now best known as a cartographer. The Kingdom of Ormus (also known as Hormoz or Hormuz) was located in the eastern side of the Persian Gulf and extended as far as Bahrain in the west at its zenith. The Kingdom was established in 11th century initially as a dependency of the Kerman Seljuk Sultanate, and later as an autonomous tributary of the Salghurids and the Ilkhanate of Iran. In its last phase Ormus became a client state of the Portuguese Empire in the East. Most of its territory was eventually annexed by the Safavid Empire in the 17th century.…
