Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 200 pages. A moving account of one woman s brave journey as she confronts her mother s past in the cold reality of the present. Einhorn has written a unique holocaust story part testimony and part detective story (Martin Lemelman, author of Mendel's Daughter). First aired as a segment of This American Life entitled "Settling the Score," The Pages in Between is the moving story of Einhorn s personal journey of reconciliation and discovery in modern-day Poland. Frustrated by her mother s refusal to talk about her tragic and unusual childhood, Einhorn traveled to Poland to find the family that safeguarded her from the Nazis as an infant. What she uncovered was the legacy left behind by a sixty year old promise made by her grandfather: to give the family that harbored her mother during the war everything he had most importantly the deed to his own family's house. In her attempt to fulfill that debt that saved her mother's life, Einhorn comes face to face with the realities of present day Poland, where a dispute of this kind requires endless digging through painful and often hidden history. Along the way, she suffers her own personal losses and begins to question how much of the future should be jeopardized in order to right the wrongs of the past. Part family history, part personal and present coming of age memoir, The Pages in Between powerfully tells of a young woman s quest for the "truth" about her mother s life, and of learning the lesson that this truth might be impossible to find. Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Frances Eugene was born July 31, 1918 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She was the oldest of 5 children born to Fred N Bumpy and Anna (Bowie) May. The family homestead was the home of the Mystic post office from 1921 until 1928. In May 1928 the family moved to the ranch on the Elk River, formally known as the May SbarS Ranch. Frances was a champion seamstress who competed at the State level in 4-H. She graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1935. Frances married Elmer Dorr on June 14, 1936. He was the son of Elmer and Hattie (Laramore) Dorr. To this union 9 children were born. They moved to the family ranch (Bar Lazy L) north of the May ranch on the Elk River in 1939. In the mid-sixties, Frances was declared legally blind with macular degeneration, but the only way it slowed her down was that she had to stop driving. Frances and Elmer ranched and were active in the Routt County Cattlemen & Cowbells (Cattlewomen) and enjoyed watching their sons wrestle under Coach Ramunno. Frances was also a member of Chapter X PEO in Steamboat, Chapter AQ PEO in Fruita, and the First Baptist Church of Steamboat and was known as Granny to most everyone who knew her! She was active in the Steamboat Springs Writer's Group in the 1980 and wrote poems, ditties and about anything and everything including a poem for many of her descendants. In 1970, Elmer passed away and Frances married George Wheeler. Frances considered George two children, Jack and Viola to be her own. Frances and George lived with Hattie's family on the ranch until George's death in 1983. Signed by Author.
