Condition: Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling almost 3 sides of a sheet of light gray paper folded once to form 4 sides approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide. The letter has been mounted on a lightly larger sheet of cream-colored stiff paper. Signed "Anglesey" There are a few small ink smudges to the 2nd & 3rd sides. Very good. The letter is addressed to Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Murchison and concerns a publication which Murchison is proposing and how it would be funded. "Some Estimate of the probable cost of money and of time is called for from General Colby, and when it is received you shall again hear from me." The reference is probably to General Thomas Frederic Colby, a leading geographer who had been director of the Ordnance Survey.Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey [1768-1854] was a British army officer and politician. After serving as Member of Parliament for Carnarvon and then for Milborne Port, he took part in the Flanders Campaign. During the Peninsula War he commanded the cavalry for Sir John Moore's army in Spain and at the Battle of Sahagun virtually destroyed a regiment of French cavalry. He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d'Erlon's column at the Battle of Waterloo, losing part of one of his legs to a cannonball at the end of the battle. In later life he served as Master-General of Ordnance from 1846 to 1852.The Scottish geologist Sir Roderick [sometimes, as here, spelled "Rhoderick"] Impey Murchison, 1st Baronet (1792-1871) was the first to describe and investigate the Silurian system. During the last decade of his life he chiefly investigated the Highlands of Scotland. Murchison was one of the founders and a president of the Royal Geographical Society and served on the Royal Commission on the British Museum. In 1855, he was appointed director-general of the British Geological Survey and director of the Royal School of Mines and the Museum of Practical Geology in Jermyn Street, London.

Add to basketsaying it would have given him "infinite gratification" to "meet the wishes of the Members of a School of which I am proud to have been a Scholar", but does not feel able to apply to Prince Albert "to obtain the sanction of Her Majesty the Queen for the performance of the Annual Westminster Play, previously to the Funeral of her late Majesty ", Queen Adelaide, who had died on 2nd December, "when it is probable that all public Theatres will be closed", in a P.S. signed 'A.' on another matter, he feels he is "not a competent authority upon the cases in question" and advises them to consult the Dean [William Buckland], together with the Marquis's engaging engraved portrait by I. Thomson after Sir William Beechey, from the European Magazine, 1st October 1821, showing him head and shoulders, in profile but turning towards the artist, 8½" x 5½" in margins 9½" x 6½", the letter 4 sides 4to., Beau Desert, Staffordshire, 4th December two tiny pinholes at top of side 3, some original offset on side 4, portrait a trifle browned in places and remargined with one corner trimmed At Waterloo the Marquis, then Lord Uxbridge, commanded the Anglo-Belgian cavalry, contributing to the victory but losing his right leg. In a garden near the church at Waterloo there is a monument to the leg which is buried there. He was made Field Marshal in 1846 and at the time of his death was the only Field Marshal outside the royal family. William Waterfield, (1832-1907), was Captain of Queen's Scholars and Captain of the School. In 1850 he went to Haileybury for two years to prepare for the Bengal Civil Service, like many of his family, which has supplied a record number of Westminsters over the years. Edward Balfour, (1833-1866), Queen's Scholar, was distinguished as head of list to Christ Church, Oxford, and as a cricketer. In 1858 Prince Albert and the Prince of Wales attended the famous Latin Play (at the end of Play Term, the first of the school year), but not Queen Victoria, who thought the subject matter 'very improper'.

Carpenter, William B. (1813-85). Autograph letter signed to Mr. [John] Paget [1811-98]). [London] 56 Regents Part Rd. N.W., June 2, 1879. 4pp. 178 x 114 mm. A few tiny pin-holes, but fine otherwise. From English physiologist and naturalist William B. Carpenter, who "helped shape the modern life sciences in Britain (Oxford DNB) through both his writings and his work as a teacher and administrator at what is now the University of London. Carpenter performed valuable researches in marine zoology, and was directly influential in persuading the British Admiralty to sponsor the Challenger expedition, the first major scientific study of the deep oceans. Carpenter is also recognized as one of the founders of the modern theory of the adaptive unconscious-he observed that the human perceptual system and the mechanism of human thought operates almost completely outside of conscious awareness. Carpenter's letter, which discusses a false confession to murder made by a mentally unbalanced young man, reads in part as follows: Dear Mr. Paget, In turning out my papers at the University today, I have come upon a document which I forward to you, containing the Father's statement of his Son's relation to the "Brompton Murder" case, with full particulars of the latter's confession, and its inconsistency with the facts. I believe that I did not send in this to the Home Secy.; but that what I specially urged upon him was the evidence with which Knowles had supplied me, of the "cracky" nature of the youth's mind, and of the obviously hereditary tendency to brood, as shown in the father and aunt-the latter an old servant of Knowles. And I remember also that there was evidence of the youth having had money in the Savings Bank, and of his having drawn out a pound just before the Crystal Palace Police Fête. This altogether made so strong an impression on Mr. Bruce, that he at once commuted the sentence; and the family were so sensible that the lad was not fit to take care of himself, that they expressed no disappointment at his not having received a free pardon. . . . Carpenter's correspondent was the police magistrate and author John Paget, whose Paradoxes and Puzzles, published in 1874, included accounts of a number of sensational crimes. We have not been able to identify the murder case to which Carpenter refers in his letter. .
