Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi (1924-2005) was a Scottish artist, known for his sculpture and graphic works. He is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of pop art. In 1979 London Transport commissioned him to create designs for 995 metres of the station at Tottenham Court Road; by the beginning of 1986 the plan had been completely carried out. This book was accompanied by an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, and celebrates Paolozzi's achievement, from the earliest drawings to the completed design, from the inspiration to the realities. After the preface, there is a brief essay by Paolozzi and a longer essay by Richard Cork, who takes a look at the relationship between art and the London Underground. The book is bound in the original blue boards with silver titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition and the contents are tight and clean with a crease and small nicks near the corner of the bottom edge of the front free endpaper. The front free endpaper has been inscribed and signed thus: " For Malcolm [the name 'Martin' has been crossed out] Rifkind 1986 - Eduardo Paolozzi". Malcolm Rifkind was then Secretary of State for Scotland in Margaret Thatcher's government. It's not clear as to whether the mis-naming of Mr Rifkind was intentional. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is slightly faded. The spine ends are lightly bumped and there is a tear of about 1/8" on the top front spine corner. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover. Inscribed and Signed by Author.
