An amateur series of sketches about the suppression of the Paris Commune. [July 1871 or shortly thereafter]. Single sheet 220x280mm, pen-and-ink drawing, divided into four captioned panels, ea…ch illustrating a satirical scene involving British visitors in Paris following the suppression of the Paris Commune. Signed with initials 'E.W.J.' at lower right. Very good condition overall. Some light toning, minor surface marks, with a crease to the bottom right hand corner. Preserved within a scrapbook, with the reverse with hand written poems and a montage of contemporary pictures. A contemporary British satirical response to the aftermath of the Paris Commune of March-May 1871, drawn shortly after the violent recapture of Paris by government forces. The four scenes depict British tourists negotiating ruined buildings, compromised hotels and rubble. The captions from July 1871 or shortly after, are from when British travel to Paris cautiously resumed and the amateur artist may well have visited Paris at around this time or conversely may have sketched these scenes based on contemporary reports in the press. Either way it is rare British contemporary satire about the Paris Commune. Signed by Author(s).

Large single leaf engraved diploma, 327 x 428mm, text within attractive border with the insignia of the Red Cross; with neat manuscript annotations and signatures; with the stamp of the 'Société de Secours Aux Blessés Militaires, Le Mans'; lightly creased with evidence of previous horizontal and vertical folds, and some faint ma…rginal soiling; a fine example. An appealing ephemeral item, the present diploma has been presented by the Red Cross to 'M. Cormery, médecin au Mans', 'en souvenir de son dévouement dans les ambulances du Mans'. The document is dated December 15th 1871 and has been signed by the President Le comte de Flavigny, Le comte Sérurier (the vice-president) and the Secretary-General Le comte de Beaufort.

This scarce work, the second publi…shed by Yitzhak Isaac Roller (1832-1900), discusses the history of the Franco-Prussian War and the Sieges of Paris, including the author's firsthand recollections of the events, in detail as he experienced them. The text is notable as an early example of secular writing in Hebrew, on a subject of contemporary history. It can be assumed that this was the very first work in Hebrew on the subject. The author states in the preface that his aim was to write on the subject using the poetic language of Biblical Hebrew (including the addition of a few contemporary expressions). To this goal he choose to publish and print the book in Amsterdam, in order to take advantage of the city's long and storied history of Hebrew printing. The initial unpaginated section contains an extensive list of subscribers for the author first book, showing his appreciation for their previous support, in French. Also included is a preface and dedication of the book to his deceased children (in both Hebrew and French). The rest of the text is solely printed in Hebrew. Includes a few reproductions of original documents from the period. The final pages contains 2 pages of errata in Hebrew. Binding with some light sunning and rubbing to extremities. Minor scratches to the covers, with a small abrasion on the front cover. Some foxing and water stains to the edges of the book block, interior covers, endpapers, and first and last pages. Sporadic minor to light water stains to a number of additional pages throughout. Book block tight. Binding in very good, interior in very good- condition overall. Yitzhak Isaac Roller (1832-1900) was an early Hebrew writer, Jewish scholar and linguist. Born in Yaburov, Galicia he later settled in Paris. His first work was an examination of the Sarcophagus of Eshmunazar II of Sidon (1875). His work translating the Phoenician text on the sarcophagus, was acclaimed in Parisian academic circles and started him on his career as a writer, and he was invited to become a member of the Societe Asiatique de Paris (The Asian Society of Paris). Roller would go on write a number of other works of Biblical scholarship.

Posters. Condition: g+. First edition. Large lithographic German poster (30 1/4 x 22 3/4") announcing the fall of Paris during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. At center, underneath the title "Unity is Strength" features a large German eagle. Right under it, in large letters is the announcement that Paris has capitulated. The… text is framed by the names of 20 French cities occupied by the German army (Sedan, Versailles, Metz, Strasbourg, Dijon, Nuits, Orleans, Meung, Champigny, Le Bourget, St. Quentin, Belfort, Le Mans, Amiens, Worth, Speicheren, Wissembourg, Noisseville, Gravellotte, and Mars la Tour). The name of each city features inside a black, white and red German flag. Now, the city of Paris didn't capitulate on January 27, 1871. On that day, the French and German delegates gathered at Versailles to discuss an armistice that was signed on the 28th. The armistice stipulated that the German army would be permitted to enter the city of Paris, which they were previously unable to occupy in spite of the siege that lasted from September 19, 1870 to January 28, 1871. The Germans occupied the city from March 1 to March 3, 1871. Two folding creases. Some age toning, with minor closed tears and pin holes at corners. Non abrasive tape to corners at verso. Le Général de Mantenfell a défendu que lon tire le canon suivant lusage afin de ne pas inquiéter la population parisienne. » Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire demande au directeur du Journal Officiel dinscrire ce communiqué au Journal Officiel en précisant de ne pas le mettre dans une partie trop apparenteAprès avoir été journaliste au globe, au National, au Courrier français et au Constitutionnel, Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire se consacra à la traduction de luvre dAristote. Ce travail lui permit dobtenir une chaire de philosophie antique au Collège de France. Élu député en 1869, il contribua à lélection de Thiers. Il fut également ministre des Affaires étrangères dans le gouvernement Jules Ferry.

Le 20 janvier, le gouvernemen…t se résout à demander un armistice qui sera finalement signé une semaine plus tard. C'est sans doute pour cette réunion que Jules Favre convoque son correspondant. Député Républicain de Paris de 1848 à 1851, Jules FAVRE fut un ardent opposant à l'Empire. Aux cotés de Victor HUGO, il tenta également, en vain, d'organiser la résistance au coup d'état du 21 décembre 1851. Il devint chef du parti républicain en 1863.
