Spence reconstructs an extraordinary episode in the early intercourse between Europe and China. It is the story of John Hu, a lowly but devout Chinese Catholic who in 1722 accompanied a Jesuit missionary on a journey to France -- a journey that ended with Hu's confinement in a lunatic asylum. At once a triumph of historical detective work and a gripping narrative, The Question of Hu deftly probes the collision of two cultures, with their different definitions of faith, madness, and moral obligation. ; Jonathan D. Spence was born in Surrey, England on August 11, 1936. He received a B.A. in history from Clare College, Cambridge University and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University. He was Sterling Professor of History at Yale University from 1993 to 2008. As a historian specializing in Chinese history, he wrote several books including The Search for Modern China, The Death of Woman Wang, and The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci. The Gate of Heavenly Peace won the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the Henry D. Vursell Memorial Award of the American Academy-Institute of Arts and Letters.; Contents: The question -- Departure -- The ocean voyage -- Landfall -- In the province -- Paris -- Orleans -- The road to Charenton -- Release -- Return ; FINE/FINE. The Judgement of Paris - the tale of the shepherd-prince who gave Venus the prize in a beaty competition - was variously treated by classical writers and became a favourite theme for artists. No painter seems to have responded to the ancient story with more intelligence and entousiasm than Peter Paul Rubens, who devoted at least eight pictures to it. A Judgement of Paris marks every stage in Rubens'career, so that the present survey, which includes familiar and unfamiliar works, allows an insight into his entire artistic development. Since his illustrations of the subject were intended for a variety of contexts, this study also adresses many aspects of Rubens's practice and production, as well as touching on his later reputation. Rubens's response to the theme is also seen in relation to earlier literary and pictorial tradition. Paris's decision had set a problem for moralists - for his choice had led, indirectly, to the onset of the Trojan War. Some commentators held that the young man, who had two other goddesses to choose from, should have preferred Minerva, patron of learning, or at least had opted sensibly for wealth, in the person of Juno. Allegorical readings has some influence on the depiction and interpretation of the theme in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is shown how Rubens came to favour the Venetian artistic convention which focussed on the moment prior to Paris's decision, thus effectively rejecting the interpretation of the Judgement as a moral condemnation. Rubens came to see the myth as a universal image of the problem of choice. But also, more specifically, he seems to have associated Paris with the artist as arbiter of beauty - the final theme explored in this illuminating book. Size: 190 x250 mm.

REFERENCES : Schulte am Esch J & ?Goerig M: The History of Anaesthesia: The Fourth International Symposium on the History of Anaesthesia, 1998, ?p. 493: "In 1928, the French Association of Surgery asked Professors Forgue and Basset to prepare a report on spinal anesthesia for its annual meeting. These rapporteurs collected 104 datasets including 222,467 cases treated with spinal anesthesia. THIS REMARKABLE REPORT WAS A LANDMARK IN THE HISTORY OF SPINAL ANESTHESIA."; Parsloe C: Deliberate total spinal anesthesia: proponents and techniques (1901-1948), International Congress Series, 2002, 1242, 169-172: "The first and subsequent spinal anesthesias were for operations on the lower extremity. Within 2 years, Tuffier used spinal to operate on the abdomen and kidney. Other surgeons began to explore the possibility of using deliberate total spinal anesthesia. In 1901, Morton described the use of spinal anesthesia for operations on all regions of the body. Le Filliâtre in 1901, Chaput in 1907, Jonnesco in 1908 and Koster in 1928 also used high levels of analgesia in what was called general spinal anesthesia. This was meant as distinctive from general inhalation anesthesia. It is remarkable that large series of operations on the thorax, neck and head were performed with deliberate total spinal anesthesia. After 1930, with admonition from Forgue and Basset, the use of total spinal anesthesia declined. They stated that the safety of spinal anesthesia resided in lower levels and suggested no total spinal, not even a high spinal, should be administered. The first anesthesiologists who used total spinal anesthesia for purposes of deliberate hypotension and decreased blood loss were Griffith and Gillies.".

1st Edition. First edition, FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF ANTONIADI'S 1909 MAP OF MARS. In 1930, Eugène Michel Antoniadi (1870-1944), a Greek/French astronomer published a work also, as is the work offered here, entitled La Planète Mars based on research he had conducted in 1909. Antoniadi's volume contained what is considered the first accurate modern map of Mars. Antoniadi's map, however, had first appeared in print 20 years earlier in a 1910 volume of La Nature, Revue des Sciences et de leurs Applications à l'Art et à l'Industrie - this volume. Authored by Emile Touchet, secretary of the Societe Astronomique de France, the article is a thorough review of the history of research about Mars. The offering here is that 1910 volume of La Nature and, again, it houses the first appearance in print of Antoniadi's famous 1909 map of Mars. As did many in the scientific community in the early 1900s, Eugène Michel Antoniadi, a Greek/French astronomer, accepted Giovanni Schiaparelli's 1877 depiction of Mars as a planet laced with canals. He had no reason not to. "During the planetary opposition in 1909, [however], Antoniadi observed Mars at the celebrated 33-inch Meudon Observatory telescope, the largest in Europe. Although he observed for only nine nights during a month-long stay. he reported seeing Mars so clearly at times that the linear appearance of the canals dissolved into an intricate mess of smaller, irregular details, and he noted that 'the geometrical "canal" network is an optical illusion" (Mapping the Mars Canal Mania: Cartographic Projection and the Creation of a Popular Icon", Imago Mundi, 58:2, 2006). What Antoniadi witnessed at Meudon in 1909 "convinced [him] that Martian canals were an illusion, a psychological artifact of human perception" (Linda Hall Museum, Scientist of the Day - Eugène Michel Antoniadi, March 1, 2017). Antoniadi's research and mapping, wrote the planetary historian William Graves Hoyt "combined with later photographic work with large telescopes at prime locations tended to reduce the canal controversy, if not the question of Martian life, to the status of an historical curiosity'" (Sheehan, Mars: The Lure of the Red Planet, pp. 174-175). However the idea that canals existed remained, in large part due to Lowell, as part of human imagination until the 1960s when it was finally felled by the Mariner voyages to mars (Imago Mundi). NOTE: Because Touchet's article is an historical review of research about Mars, it includes other the work of other astronomers as well. CONDITION & DETAILS: Complete volume. 4to. [6], 214pp., [4]. Tightly and solidly bound in the publisher's maroon binding, the volume has some scuffing at the edge tips though no more than would be appropriate for its age. Gilt-lettered and -ruled at the spine. Ottime condizioni.
