Bound in a near contemporary dark red morroco over cloth covered boards the binding clean and tight with no chip's splits or bumps. A very good clean copy free of foxing, inscriptions or marks. The first edition of this monograph on Parakeets by the British zoologist David Seth-Smith, 'A description of the habits, in life and captivity, of about 131 of the smaller species of the parrot groups. the coloured plates are excellent' (Zimmer). Originally issued in six parts, this volume has the paper wrap front cover of each part bound together at the end. Solid and very clean copy. Red cloth covers show rubbing along edges, as well as a little creasing at corners and spine ends. Bottom cover shows some rubbing and a couple of small and light stains. End leaves are a little darkened. Volume remains tight and contents are very clean. lovely plates!!!

A handsome publication, originally published in six wrappered parts, one of the last colour plate bird books and with many Australian parrots. The plates were first published in the Aviculture Magazine. David Seth-smith was curator of birds at London Zoo at the turn of the twentieth century. He was also the foundation editor of The Avicultural Magazine. He visited Australia twice and befriended, among others, A. J. Campbell.

Black and white illustrations in the text. Bound in recent half morocco with marbled end papers, original wrappers dated June 1902 - October 1903 bound at the rear. Some light fading to the leather on the spine and a very small tear to the top edge of one page but generally an excellent clean copy. Despite the title the contents include Lories and Lorrikeets and Conures.
