Previous owner's name stamped on the front pastedown (inside front cover), otherwise pages are completely clean and just slightly tanned. Exterior covers and spine are also spotless except for some scraping along the bottom edges of front cover and spine. No bumped corners. Slight tanning to top edge of spine. The dust jacket is not price-clipped. There is a light sticker scar to the top of the inside front flap. Slight soiling to back panel. Some compressions wrinkles close to the top and bottom edges of the front and back panels. There are also some small chips and tears, the deepest of which is about 1/3", and a couple small water spots in lower right corner of the back panel. His second novel, the story of a young American expatriate in Paris just after World War II, a novel which perhaps takes on more significance in light of Matthiessen's recent admissions to having been employed by the CIA while he was in Paris himself during those years. 178 pp. Very good in a fair dust jacket. (ghost of a tape mark on rear endpaper, minor shelfwear, some chipping to the dj, loss of about 1/4 inch at the ends of the spine, usual sunning to the small title block on the spine, original price of $3.00 still present.) Overall, a reasonably attractive copy of a rather hard to find book.
