Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Colour Plates (illustrator). First Edition. INSCRIBED ON THE FFEP BY FRANCIS WARNER. Oxford Theatre Texts 19. 80 pages clean and tight. 'Francis Warner has shown once more he is a masterful poet and dramatist. Healing Nature, his eleventh play, is his best work to date. The action centres round Pericles, the aristocratic general, commandingly played by Rob Smith, as he creates "an Athens all the world will imitate'; only to see the tide of fortune turn and the empire fall into decay. Its exploration of the dilemmas facing empire-builders and empire-losers is original, thought-provoking, and relevant. It is a compelling play which combines the grand, heroic drama of Marlowe's Tamburlaine with moments of exquisitely delicate lyric poetry and unexpected dashes of humour: The Stage. 'A real treat in poetry was to be had in the Sheldonian last night. This was the premiere performance of Healing Nature, by Francis Warner . The play is about the turmoil that the birth pangs of democracy bring to a city, and the revolution and hostilities that accompany it. Francis Warner's play was safe in the hands of the Oxford University Dramatic Society, who, under the direction of Mark Payton, put on a classically Greek production. All brought out the Shakespearian quality of the play's verse and depth of meaning. And there could have been no better setting than the magnificent amphitheatre that is the Sheldonian: Oxford Mail Portrait of Pericles by Lucy Warner Cover design by Billett Potter Size: 8vo. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Gift inscription from author to Carolyn Dewald on ffep. Includes letter and postcard from author tipped in. Lower corners bumped.; 324 pages; Thucydides, Pericles, and the Idea of Athens in the Peloponnesian War is the first comprehensive study of Thucydides' presentation of Pericles' radical redefinition of the city of Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Martha Taylor argues that Thucydides subtly critiques Pericles' vision of Athens as a city divorced from the territory of Attica and focused, instead, on the sea and the empire. Thucydides shows that Pericles' reconceputalization of the city led the Athenians both to Melos and to Sicily. Toward the end of his work, Thucydides demonstrates that flexible thinking about the city exacerbated the Athenians' civil war. Providing a thorough critique and analysis of Thucydides' neglected book 8, Taylor shows that Thucydides praises political compromise centered around the traditional city in Attica. In doing so, he implicitly censures both Pericles and the Athenian imperial project itself.; Signed by Author.

Beatrice Darbyshire by Barbara Chapman is a beautifully crafted biographical study of the Western Australian artist Beatrice Dean Darbyshire (1901 1988). Published in 1990 by Cygnet Books and the University of Western Australia Press, the book spans 112 pages and includes over 90 illustrations of Darbyshire s etchings and drawings. Darbyshire was renowned for her printmaking, particularly in the 1920s and 1930s, and was considered one of the finest etchers in Western Australia. She studied at the Royal College of Art in London and exhibited internationally, including at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley. Her work often depicted the landscapes of Balingup and portraits of Aboriginal people she met during travels in the Kimberley region. Chapman s book not only showcases Darbyshire s artistic achievements but also includes tributes from figures like Hendrik Kolenberg, Mollie Lukis, and Mary Durack. It s a heartfelt homage to an artist whose quiet brilliance was rediscovered later in life. If you're interested in Australian art history or the story of a remarkable woman artist, this book is a gem. Book (2) The Tiggy Puggenheim Collection: Leon Pericles. Book also appear is came from a book launch. Type letter with a signature "Moira Pericles" Date 1994. and another leaflet (see photo). Book condition is near fine. Book boars and book block are clean & unmarked. Spine intact. Dust jacket very good, light scratches and no tear. Spine intact. Over-all a very special & neat copy. The Tiggy Puggenheim Collection is one of Leon Pericles most iconic and satirical exhibitions, first launched in 1995. It cleverly riffs on the legacy of famed art patron Peggy Guggenheim, reimagining her as Tiggy Puggenheim in a whimsical and irreverent parody of blockbuster art shows. Here s what makes it special: Concept & Style: Pericles created a fictional art collection filled with humorous and surreal works, blending collage, printmaking, and painting. The pieces often feature imaginary artists and absurd backstories, poking fun at the art world s pretensions. Touring Exhibition: The collection toured 20 venues across Australia over nine months, making it one of the largest solo touring exhibitions by an Australian artist at the time. Book Edition: A beautifully illustrated hardcover book was published in 1994, featuring 146 pages of artworks and commentary by Julian Leatherdale. It s now a collector s item and occasionally resurfaces in rare bookshops. Cultural Impact: The exhibition helped cement Pericles reputation for blending satire with fine art, and his fictional town of Widjimorphup plays a recurring role in the narrative. If you re into art that s both clever and visually rich, this collection is a gem. Over-all both books are in great condition. See photo. Extra charges for over-sea shipping due to weight is over 500gram. For more information you can contact me via e-mail or by mobile. Weight of book (1) 0.884. Book (2) 1.165kg.
