Martha Taylor argues that Thucydides subtly critiques Pericles' vision of Athens as a city divorced from the territory of Attica and focused, instead, on the sea and the empire. Beatrice Darbyshire by Barbara Chapman is a beautifully crafted biographical study of the Western Australian artist Beatrice Dean Darbyshire (1901 1988). Published in 1990 by Cygnet Books and the University of Western Australia Press, the book spans 112 pages and includes over 90 illustrations of Darbyshire s etchings and drawings. Darbyshire was renowned for her printmaking, particularly in the 1920s and 1930s, and was considered one of the finest etchers in Western Australia. She studied at the Royal College of Art in London and exhibited internationally, including at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley. Her work often depicted the landscapes of Balingup and portraits of Aboriginal people she met during travels in the Kimberley region. Chapman s book not only showcases Darbyshire s artistic achievements but also includes tributes from figures like Hendrik Kolenberg, Mollie Lukis, and Mary Durack. It s a heartfelt homage to an artist whose quiet brilliance was rediscovered later in life.
