Laid in is one Autographed Letter Signed and one Post Card signed by Henry Miller to the book's recipient, Dr. Liebmann of New York. Both dated January 1956. There is also an address label which presumably was affixed to the package containing the book sent by Miller and possibly in his hand. Moreover there's a chapter "Contre les chercheurs de la pierre philosophale et souffleurs d'Arquemie". The first chapter attempts to reconcile differing views of various writers, as cited by Berquen, on the origin of gemstones and precious metals, with following chapters taking up the principal gemstones, and some minor ones, as diamond, sapphire, topaz, ruby, spinel, emerald. The chapter on pearl is augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production. The chapter on gold and other metals, is also enlarged (p. 111-120) by remarks on the merits of gold and other metals, and by the comments of the celebrated alchemist Nicolas Flamel (d. 1418) on the philosopher's stone and alchemical attempts to transmute metals, but the book is a very sound and sober attack on the believers in transmutation. -Provenance: Name in pen on title page: "De Centrigtizen"? Alain Ranval, alias Ramon Pipin, qui sévit au sein du groupe " Au Bonheur des Dames " et fonda le mythique groupe " Odeurs ", alliant humour subversif, spectacles délirants et musique exigeante, nous balance un texte à l'arrière goût de roman policier. Ce texte, rédigé avec une écriture savoureuse, pleine d'un humour décapant, entre Michel Audiard et San-Antonio, cache derrière les bons mots et les descriptions hautes en couleur, une amère réflexion désabusée, sur le temps qui inexorablement passe, sur la vieillesse sénilisante et l'inévitable fin de vie. Tirage spécial hors commerce, à 10 exemplaires numérotés et dédicacés par Ramon Pipin, réservés à ma librairie ( le numéro et la dédicace varient d'un livre à l'autre ). On joint en bonus un fascicule de 24 pages au format 13,5 x 12,5 cm, intitulé " Perles à Pipin ", illustré par Olivier Legan. Bel ensemble collector, en état de neuf.
