Dr. Gates obituary in the NY Times noted: "Dr. Gates, a faculty member of the Columbia University Teachers College from 1917 to 1956, had served as a director of its Institute of Educational Research. For half a century, Dr. Gates produced a prodigious output of research and writing on education, particularly the teaching of reading, totaling 300 titles of books, monographs and articles. An exponent of the newer work and play reading materials, he advocated "a program in reading which would satisfy the needs of widely different individuals." He edited and revised a reading series for Macmillan for many years and also supervised reading tests published by Teachers College Press.

Front cover has been retaped on to the cloth spine binding, lots of old creases and edgewear, back cover the same with a vertical crease and about a 3" tear. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Very cute school reader, illustrated by Beatrice Edgerly. Illustrated cover has light wear at corners and spine ends. Inside, child's name written on first page and school inkstamp on title page. Almost every page has a charming color illustration covering 1/3 to 1/2 of the page. Quite a few of the pages have small tears near the edge at top or bottom (maybe half). Most do not extend to the text or illustrations, but a few do. There are words written in ink on some of the pages, next to the text. There's some overall grubbiness as you would expect from a book of this type.
