Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. 1st Edition. Oblong 4to., (8 2/8 x 10 4/8 inches). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, and 15 fine plates watermarked 1824-1827 (some minor marginal spotting and offsetting of plates onto text leaves and guards). Contemporary half burgundy morocco, grey paper boards with gilt-lettering piece on the front cover (extremities worn with loss). Provenance: from the library of Jacques Levy, his sale, Sotheby's, 20th April 2012, lot 335 First edition, including views in Monmouthshire, Devon, Cornwall, Glamorganshire, of churches, rivers, and other bucolic scenes. He numbered some professional artists among his pupils, including his eldest son, William Robert (who achieved little success), and John Glover, but he was more sought after as a teacher by aristocratic amateurs. After 1790 he ceased to exhibit for nineteen years and travelled in search of picturesque material to the west country and south Wales (from 1791), and later to the Isle of Wight, the Lake District, and north Wales. Payne's innovations, however, had advanced the boundaries of watercolour technique. His initial popularity and extensive teaching practice contributed greatly to the burgeoning interest in watercolour, both as a social accomplishment and as a serious field for collectors" (David Japes for DNB).
