Der Komponist passt seine außermusikalischen Inspirationen (aus der Bildenden Kunst und derLiteratur) den Gesetzmäßigkeiten musikalischer Formen an, die so Raum geben für Assoziationen von Stimmungsbildern bis hin zu philosophischen Reflexionen über das Wesen der menschlichen Existenz.Martinu komponierte die Fresken" nach dem Zyklus der Renaissance-Fresken von Piero della Francesca in der Basilika des Heiligen Franziskus von Assisi in Arezzo , im Frühling 1955. Die Uraufführung bei den Salzburger Festspielen am 26. August 1956 mit den Wiener Philharmonikern dirigierte Rafael Kubelík, dem das Werk auch gewidmet ist.Im Juli 1957 komponierte Martinu die ersten beiden Sätze seiner Parabeln" und kehrte erst Anfang des Jahres 1958 zu diesem Werk zurück (den letzten, 3. Satz vollendete er am 8. Februar). Die Uraufführung fand am 13. Februar 1959 unter Charles Munch mit dem Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston statt. Die Satzüberschriften der beiden ersten Sätze der Parabeln" beziehen sich auf den philosophischen Essay Citadelle" von Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, während Martinu das Motto für den 3. Satz als freie Montage von Zitaten aus Georges Neveuxs Theaterstück Le voyage deThésée" schuf, das später auch als Vorlage zu seiner Oper Ariadne" (1958) dienen sollte. Obwohl die Verbindung zwischen den Mottos und der Musik der Parabeln" nur lose und im Fall des 3. Satzes sogar beinahe zufällig ist, sind die Texte integraler Bestandteil des Werks. Der vorliegende Band der Gesamtausgabe basiert auf einer gründlichen Auswertung aller Autographe und ihrer Abschriften sowie der umfangreichen Korrespondenz des Komponisten, aus der sich eine Reihe neuer Erkenntnisse zur Entstehungsgeschichte der Kompositionen ergaben. Diese flossen auch in das Vorwort ein, das auch eine Bewertung besagter Mottos der Parabeln" in Bezug auf das Spätwerk des Komponisten vornimmt.…
