R S Surtees Society, Craddock 1986 Facsimile Edition 406pp plus prelims. Illustrated Hardback. Robert Smith Surtees (born May 17, 1805, The Riding, Northumberland, died March 16, 1864, Brighton, Sussex) English novelist. Passionately addicted to riding to hounds from his youth, Surtees devoted nearly all his writings to horses and riding. In 1831 he launched New Sporting Magazine. His famous comic character Mr. Jorrocks, a blunt Cockney grocer entirely given over to fox hunting, appeared in Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities (1838), Handley Cross (1843), and Hillingdon Hall (1845). Among his other novels, which also portray the boredom, ill manners, discomfort, and coarse food of English provincial life, are Hawbuck Grange (1847) and Mr. Facey Romford's Hounds (1865). All his novels were originally published in serial form in magazines such as 'Punch' anonymously at first. This copy, a facsimile of the original, is prepared by the R S Surtees Society, with a specially commissioned introduction, is in MINT condition with no inscriptions, markings or marginalia. Bound in red skivertex boards with blind stamping borders front and rear and gilt titling and decoration to the front and spine. The stock is bright and tight . The book is encased in a gold paper covered board slipcase which is also in MINT condition. This is just one of eight Surtees Titles I am selling on this site. Ref O7 Size: 406pp + Prelims. Leather. Condition: Very Good. First edition. The first edition of this popular Surtees hunting novel, illustrated beautifully with hand-coloured plates throughout, with an impressive provenance. The first edition of this work.'Plain or Ringlets' is one of Robert Smith Surtees' popular hunting novels, featuring heavy overtones on the social life and customs of the nineteenth century.Illustrated with a hand-coloured title page, twelve hand-coloured plates, and in-text engravings.Collated, complete.Robert Smith Surtees was a popular sporting writer, beginning his writing career by contributing to the "Sporting Magazine". His best novel is often considered to be "Mr Sponge"s Sporting Tour", with his hero, Soapey Sponge, being as popular as his comic character Jorrocks, featured in numerous novels, including "Handley Cross". His comical novels are engaging and witty, with his writing style and character sometimes being compared to Charles Dickens.Illustrated by John Leech, a caricaturist best known for his work for 'Punch'. In 1940 she bought Julians Park and redesigned the interior. Her library was impressive, with many examples of her own bookbinding.Audrey was an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty, the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII (though she was also rumoured to be his daughter, or the lover of King Edward VIII), featured in the 'Book of Beauty' by Cecil Beaton. She had many high profile friends, such as Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Fred Astaire, and Nancy Mitford, a sparkling hostess of the Edwardian period, her hedonistic antics bringing her into the Bright Young Things. In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the spine and extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Hinges are starting a little but remain firm. Bookplate to the front paste down and to the recto to the front endpaper. Prior bookseller's label to the verso to the front endpaper. First edition in book form, following publication in 13 monthly parts between 1859 and 1860, of the last novel to be published in Surtees's lifetime. Leech's humorous illustrations and his "caricatured but more modern approach [were] the perfect foil to Surtees's writing" (ODNB). Surtees's (1805-64) novels revolve around British field sports. His "sharp, authentic descriptions of the hunting field have retained their popularity among fox-hunters" and "his mordant observations on men, women, and manners; his entertaining array of eccentrics, rakes, and rogues; his skill in the construction of lively dialogue (a matter over which he took great pains); his happy genius for unforgettable and quotable phrases have won him successive generations of devoted followers" (ODNB). Tooley 477; Wolff 6636. Octavo. Engraved title page, 12 engraved plates, all with contemporary hand-colouring, 44 engraved illustrations in text. Original vertical-ribbed reddish brown cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, ornate blind border to covers, gilt design to front cover, yellow coated endpapers. Spine faded with a few nicks and small chips at ends, sides bright, extremities lightly rubbed, foxing to endpapers and a few initial and final leaves, verso of last leaf browned, otherwise generally bright and clean. A very good copy. …

First Edition. In the Original Monthly Parts With Hand Colored Vignette Title and Twelve Humorous Hand Colored Plates by John Leech SURTEES, Robert Smith. [LEECH, John, illustrator]. Plain or Ringlets? London: Bradbury and Evans, 1860. First edition. Thirteen parts bound in twelve. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 5/8 in; 223 x 144 mm). viii, [2], 406, pp. Thirteen hand-colored steel-engraved plates, heightened with gum arabic. Hand-colored etched vignette title and twelve hand-colored plates. Black and white wood engravings throughout. Bound without the 12-page catalogue at end of the thirteenth part. However this set has two additional advertisements: "New Books published by John Camden Hotten" 2 pp. at end of part IX. and "New Books published by John Camden Hotten. Rubbing the Gilt Off" at the front of part X. Publisher's original red-brown pictorial wrappers. A very good set, chemised and housed in a red cloth clamshell case with black leather spine label lettered in gilt. One of the great pleasures of Plain or Ringlets is the interpretation of its events by the artist John Leech. He was introduced to Surtees by William Thackeray, a great friend and admirer of Surtees' work. The first novel Leech illustrated for Surtees was Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour. Surtees had originally asked Thackeray to illustrate this work, but Thackeray declined on the grounds that he could not draw horses; instead, he recommended Leech, being 'of a sporting turn' and who 'to my mind draws a horse excellently'. Leech illustrated all of Surtees' subsequent works and the two men became friends. The illustrations follow the text closely, a result of close collaboration between the artist and writer. Although Leech was responsible for numerous book illustrations, and is lauded as the chief cartoonist of Punch, some of his best work is to be found in the pages of Surtees' novels. Provenance: Van Santvoord Merle-Smith (1889-1943) was a United States soldier, lawyer, and investment banker, who served as Third Assistant Secretary of State from 1920 to 1921, and as Executive Intelligence Officer to General Douglas MacArthur during World War II. Illustrations by John Leech and H.K. Browne. In near fine condition. Surtees' was arguably a match for Dickens in the field of social observation, whilst surpassing him as an observer of the natural world: with warmth and humor Surtees captured an era and a way of life that reached its zenith during Queen Victoria's reign.…
