Title is QUITE RARE, and in fact, this was the oldest date that I could find offered for sale on the net for this book! Olive colored boards have black font on spine and front cover, and show some shelf wear and spotting, corners and spine ends are bumped and just starting to show some white. Hinges are great, no marks or po names, tight, clean, square, and odor free. No DJ. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Full marbled or mottled calf, with gilt-blocked title and bands to spine. Octavo/8to, measures around 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 1 1/4", xxviii + 419 pp and one-page list of errata at rear. Extensive scuffing and wear to binding, especially to spine, with gilt detail somewhat faded, though title still visible. Rubbing at edges, hinges and corners, which are bumped, with a little tearing. Some cracking to inner hinges but binding quite firm. Page edges which are browned, scuffed and otherwise marked. Marking to pastedowns with pencil writing and mathematical calculations. Some loss to corners or top outer corners of preliminary parges up to introduction and loss to bottom outer corners of leaves covering pages 81-84. The occasional other tear and some dog-eared corners and creased. Staining to half-title and title pages, some scribble marks to title page. The odd dog-eared page corner. Some light foxing to pages throughout, a little toning at edges. Occasional thumbing and other marking. Some pencil marginalia and child's scribbling to a number of pages throughout. Internally, the top 2 inches of every page has absorbed a relatively inoffensive mild stain, which is strongest on the prelims through to the end of the preface.

Some light spotting and soiling to pages, half-title reinforced, small (2 cm) marginal ink blot to half-title and title-pages, egregious ownership stamp (partially erased) on first page of Introduction, repair to tear on C2 (affecting text). Otherwise a nice tight copy. PROVENANCE: Ownership stamp of B. Rothwell. FIRST EDITION of John Bonnycastle's elementary treatise on trigonometry, with practical applications to surveying, astronomy, and navigation. Bonnycastle was an English teacher of mathematics and a prolific author. Between 1782 and 1785, he was appointed professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, a position he held until his death in 1821. Leigh Hunt thought highly of Bonnycastle and included him in his book 'Lord Byron and Some of his Contemporaries'.

Written by Benjamin Peirce (1809 - 1880), a professor at Harvard University for fifty years known for his contributions to celestial mechanics, statistics, number theory, algebra, and philosophy of mathematics. He is considered to be the Father of Pure Mathematics in America with his work directly influencing the study of mathematics in America. This is the first edition of his first book. Bound in modern brown leatherette boards with gilt title, author, and date to spine. Dampstaining to bottom corners of first forty pages. Foxing throughout, browning to edges, and occasional spots of soiling. Includes five folding plates to rear. 438 pages plus plates. Small octavo. SCI/012725.

Condition: Fair. 8vo, [iv],466,[ii]32pp (21x13cms), recent full panelled calf with title gilt on label, 3 copper plates of trigonometrical diagrams, one corner tear not affecting text (C4). The plates fold out for ease of reference, (creased along the folds and dust marked and creased on edges), has a new ffep. Overall the text is clean.Comments: published by one of the important British Classical publishers of the the 18th Century. Publication of this edition was overseen by Andrew, son of Robert Foulis who took over the firm after the death of his brother, the older Andrew Foulis. The press was already struggling financially during this period. Robert Simson (1687 - 1768), attended the University of Glasgow in 1702 at age 14, studied classics and oriental languages, later pursued interests in mathematics especially of the early Greeks. In 1711 was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow University, devoting much energy to restoring and editing the works of the early Greek geometers. His first edition of Euclid's elements was published in 1756, was immensely successful, becoming for many years the standard work, being republished in various editions as late as 1944. Wear and foxing to pages. Cracking to front hinge, fading and markings to spine and boards. Title written in ink on spine 'Vince's Trigonometry' and a small in name on front pastedown 'Meyricke. An additional errata slip included p.180. 'Adapted to the Use of Students in Philosophy'. Samuel Vince was a Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge until his death in 1821. He wrote on many aspects of his expertise, including logarithms and imaginary numbers and, like Charles Babbage, sought to use rational arguments in favour of the belief in religious miracles. This book was possbily a continuation of a 1795-99 digest of university lectures written by Vince and James Wood. Scarce. 8vo.

Illustrated with many tables, charts, and plates. One fold out conical section at title page. Errata slip inset after last Table on back free endpaper. A former owner's bookplate has been removed from the front paste down. A scarce book in very good condition. The author of this book was Matthew Maury, a renowned U.S. Navy officer. He was an accomplished navigator and scientist. He was also fervently committed to White Supremacy, joining the Confederacy to defend the Confederate coast line during the American Civil War. Among other things, he experimented with electrically detonated torpedoes (the Confederate ships using this deadly invention sank fifty five Union ships). Written years before his participation in the Civil War, this American title has detailed chapters on algebra, geometry, logarithms, trigonometry, spherics and nautical astronomy. A very scarce title. This book belonged to Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. David was a prominent hydrographic specialist who served with the Hakluyt Society and the Society for Nautical Research. David's bookplate is on the front free end paper.
