Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition of Huxley's classic satiric novel. Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt bindery, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine… condition. Point Counter Point's title is a reference to the flow of arguments in a debate, and a series of these exchanges tell the story. Instead of a single central plot, there are a number of interlinked story lines and recurring themes (as in musical "counterpoint"). As a roman à clef, many of the characters are based on real people, most of whom Huxley knew personally, such as D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Sir Oswald Mosley, Nancy Cunard, and John Middleton Murry, and Huxley is depicted as the novel's novelist, Philip Quarles. It was named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Boards have mild shelving wear, stains on the front and rear covers, and light fraying along the fore corners and spine head and tail edges. Textblock has light soiling throughout, a pencil mark on the s…econd rear end-page, mild wear along the edges, moderate age-toning along the edges, stains along the edges, and gilt along the head edges. Signed twice, once by former U.S. Navy Secretary Paul H. Nitze on the front end-page, and once by author Aldous Huxley on the publisher's limitation page, limited edition #220/256. DL consignment. Shelved in Case 6. "Point Counter Point" is Aldous Huxley's fourth novel and is notable for it's more complex and serious tone as well as for being the longest novel he would write. It remains well regarded for it's method of storytelling and would see a BBC adaptation in 1968. Aldous Huxley was born July 26, 1894 to the prominent Huxley family. He would become well-known for his depictions of both dystopia and utopia in fiction and as a prominent universalist philosopher. Paul H. Nitze was a former U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Having begun government service during World War II, he would be immensely influential in shaping American policy towards the Soviet Union during the Cold War, helping to establish the policy of "containment" and heightened militarization of the American state. 1390286. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. First Limited Edition, First Printing, #220/256.
