FIRST EDITION. 8vo (22 x 15cm). pp.[viii]+300. Original green cloth stamped in black, with gilt lettering and vignettes of geese. Yellow coated endpapers containing advertisments, pp 1-3, 4-[36]. 176 black and white illustrations. Top and bottom edges of boards very slightly bumped, edges browned but contents clean. Overall a very good bright example. First edition of Sharp's first book, designed to be a breechloader-age replacement for Hawker's "Instructions to Young Sportsmen". With chapters on guns, ammunition, punts, decoys, various game birds etc. Illustrations by Herbert Sharp, the author's brother. A 1902 press-cutting is tipped into the front endpaper, relating to the Victorian Wild Birds Protection Act.

Cracking to inner hinge but contents remain tight vg. Usually found in a green cloth binding this binding differs with the duck vignette to the upper cover and no vignette to the spine, the contents appear the same but without the book adverts found in the green binding.
