Seltene erste Ausgabe. - "Mr. (now Sir John) Luebock's Pre-Historic Times is a collection of facts and inferences bearing on primitive archseology, and the probable antiquity and early condition of mankind on the earth. Papers on the " Danish Shell-Mounds, the " Swiss Lake-Dwellings," etc, which have appeared in the Natural History Review, and Leclures on Archceology, delivered at the Royal Institution, are incorporated in it with a quantity of new matter; and the whole forms a body of clear information, and discreet and moderate argument, on a number of obscure but highly interesting problems of our most ancient history. Before giving some account of the contents of the work, we must, however, take notice of a passage which, of all things in it, we like the least. This is a note which, placed as it is conspicuously at the end of the preface, is sure to catch the reader's eye." (The Anthropological Review, Vol. 3, 1865, No. 11, p. 338). Lubbock (1834-1913), a close friend of Charles Darwin since childhood, coined the terms Palaeolithic and Neolithic. He defined the Palaeolithic as the era of chipped stone, and the Neolithic as the era of polished stone (stone axes). With his distinction between finds from glacial moraines (drift) and Danish shell mounds, he also anticipated the separation between the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic, which goes back to Hodder M. Westropp (1866). Together with the collector John Evans, he succeeded in acquiring finds from Hallstatt" (Wikipedia). - Binding slightly rubbed and slightly dusty, stamp on the flyleaf and title page, frontispiece and title page slightly brown-stained, very good copy in original publisher's binding.
