Stated first printing. Illustrated. Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823 - 1911) was an American Unitarian minister, author, abolitionist, and soldier. He was active in the American Abolitionism movement during the 1840s and 1850s, identifying himself with disunion and militant abolitionism. During the Civil War, he served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment, from 1862-1864. Following the war, Higginson devoted much of the rest of his life to fighting for the rights of freed people, women and other disfranchised peoples. Higginson was portrayed by Matthew Broderick in the film Glory.

Hardcover. 8vo. Grey cloth with gilt lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. ix, 363pp. Frontispiece, decorative endpapers. Near fine/very good. Jacket slightly edgeworn and a tad rubbed. Tight, handsome first edition of this biography of the military and literary figure (1823-1911). Civil War buffs know him as colonel of the first Union negro army regiment, and in this context Robert W. Johannsen describes this as "An effective study of Higginson's life; the author places strong emphasis on Higginson's friendship with Emily Dickinson." Others know Higginson as writer, abolitionist and mainly the friend and editor of Dickinson. A lovely copy. NEVINS II, 99.

In the original very dark greeny covers with blind stamped decoration over all, and the spine with gilt titling. Some rubbing to the gilt lettering and boards, but the covers are complete, clean, and all hinges tight. Apparently professionally recased at some point in the past preserving all the original cloth and endpapers, etc, - just improving it. Even I couldn't see this, until, looking for it, I noticed a slight gap in the paper at the gutters between the pastedowns and the front free endpapers. The book is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks Very Good. Page fore-edges irregularly cut and toned/browning with age, but generally clean. A note in old ink to the top of the title page stating "Belfast Chess Club 1848. From Francis McCracken. 1st English edition. (xx) + 291 pp + ( 1 page Advert 'Works on Chess' by George Walker) + (32 Advert pages for Works by the Publishers dated October 1846). Internally some hand-written annotations to the Contents pages, which I have left, as they may be interesting to a future buyer; the page edges, as noted, are lightly tanned to various degrees, and there is odd smudge, foxing(yellowy-brown) spot, and mark to the margins, but generally the text block is pretty clean. A small old (contemporary) booksellers' label to the foot of the front pastedown = Sold by Hodgson, Booksellers.Belfast, and a small old (contemporary) Binders label to the rear pastedown = Bound by Westleys & Clark. London. Carl Friedrich Andreyevich von Jaenisch (styled De Jaenisch in this book) was a Russian chess player and analyst. In 1842 he gave the name to the French Defense (1. E4 e6) and the Center Game (1. E4 e5 2. D4) in his book 'Analyse Nouvelle des ouvertures du jeu des Echecs' (1843). This book came from the Chess collection of the late John Bradley, Irish archaeologist, Scholar, Medievalist, Author and more, and member of Kilkenny Chess Club. He was on the team that won the Armstrong Cup in 2011 and represented Ireland at two European finals, etc. Overall a Good Plus, but not perfect copy, due to age and use, but no damage or major marks.
