"A Sermon Preached Before the University of Oxford, on the Feast of the Purification." Oxford: John Henry Parker, 1848. First edition. Removed from a bound volume, 35 pages. Presentation copy: "From the Author". The "controversy" was the Oxford Movement. Sewell, of Exeter College, Oxford, had been friends with John Henry Newman up until Newman published (anonymously) Tract 90 (January 25, 1841), suggesting that the "39 Articles of Religion" of the Church of England were more in line with Catholic theology than Protestant. Sewell published many sermons and a severely anti-Catholic novel, "Hawkstone", 1845. He was the Oxford Don who ripped up and burned a copy of James Anthony Froude's "The Nemesis of Faith" (1849) when he was complaining to his class about the book and a student admitted to having one. A bit cut down for binding, not quite touching the inscription; a 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch piece torn from the top fore-edge of the title without lose of text, which is in two pieces, separated between pages 18 and 19. A Good copy, and rare.
