Spine has some surface wrinkling, browning to the white panel and some light edge rubbing. Light browning to the white centre panel of the rear cover which also has a two inch patch of discolouration and a small surface tear near the bottom left corner where a label has been removed. Pages a little browned with a trace of a price in pencil to the first page but otherwise unmarked. First printing of the Penguin edition. Originally published in 1927 by Collins under the name A.B. Cox. All editions of this book are very rare.

It began with an arguement: How would a respectable, ordinary man behave if he thought he'd committed a murder? Ex-library with stamps to the rear pastedown. Yellow, soiled boards with black print and a beverage ring on the front. Bumped and rubbed with wear and fraying at the edges. Spine darkened, 2" tear up the lower front spine fold with the remnants of brown tape across. Hinges cracked, rear breaking, binding loose, page 335 detached and laid in. Jacket blurb glued to the front end paper. Still, a very scarce first edition. Ex-Library.

Third printing of the 1927 first edition. Publisher's original black cloth with red titles to the spine and upper board, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with bumping and rubbing to the extremities, the spine a touch faded and a few light marks to the cloth at fore-edge. The content's, with a previous owner's bookplate and shelf stamp to the front pastedown and his ownership name and date to the top of the title page, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the rubbed, creased and nicked dustwrapper, that has a few short closed tears and small chips at the folds and is otherwise bright and attractive.
