FIRST EDITION, THIRD ISSUE. TP + [3]-222, Octavo. First Edition, Third Issue (Warda 77).The third printing of the first edition of the Prolegomena, identified by Warda as having an ornamental floral piece at the bottom of page 222 (rather than the rod - sometime called a staff or a bar - with twisting leaves found there in the second printing, Warda 76). The first printing is easily identified by the differences in the headpiece found on page 3. This is a "floriated bar" in the first printing and a floral design with two small angels in the center (as here). Finally, in the first issue, page 78, line 8 has the misprinted "subjektiv" rather than the correct"'objektiv" - a mistake that was corrected in the two later printing. [Interestingly, an early owner of this copy has changed the correct "objektiv" back to the original error, "subjective," with a small ink insert.]The Prolegomena is Kant's defense of his Critik der reinen Vernunft (The Critique of Pure Reason) and is considered by many to be his most beautiful and comprehensive book. It certainly continues to be widely read and admired as one of his most concise and approachable works today. It was in the Preface of this book that Kant famously relates the story of being "woken from his dogmatic slumbers" by his reading of David Hume's challenging Treatise on Human Nature (1739-40).The book was written primarily to remove some of the bewilderment that had greeted the release of the first edition of the Critik der reinen Vernunft (the so-called "A" text of the Critik) in 1781. Kant felt that his book had been severely misunderstood and hence, unfairly criticized - most especially by Garve in his review of the Critik in the Göttinger Gelehrten Anzeiger. The clarifying points made in the Prolegomena were subsequently incorporated into Kant's second edition of the Critik der reinen Vernunft (the so-called "B" text of the Critik) when it was issued in 1787. Contemporary ½ leather with marbled boards. There are five raised bands on the spine, gilt decorations 1927 D41") neatly written in ink. Aside from a small ink splash on pages 60-61, this is a near fine contemporary copy - bright, tight and clean - of this immensely important work by Immanuel Kant. First Edition, second issue with woodcut device to title, woodcut head-piece (angels) on p. 3, and woodcut tail-piece (rod with leaves) on page 222. Two titles in one octavo volume (7 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches; 199 x 117 mm). 222, [2, blank] pp. With final blank. [Together with] Grundlegung der Metaphysik der Sitten. Dritte Auflage. Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1792. Third edition. [16], 128 pp. With vignette on title-page. Separate title-page for each work. Full original marbled paper boards. Printed paper spine label. Paper on spine and label splitting, but holding firm. Small ink stamp on title-page of first book. Internally very clean. Overall a very good copy. "The Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics is the preeminent synopsis in the history of philosophy. Kant completed it about fifteen months after the Critique of Pure Reason was published. He wanted to present his critical philosophy concisely and accessibly, for 'future teachers' of metaphysics. He also wanted to convince his fellow metaphysicians 'that it is unavoidably necessary to suspend their work for the present,' until they have determined 'whether such a thing as metaphysics is even possible at all' (4:255). Although the Critique 'always remains the foundation to which the Prolegomena refer only as preparatory exercises' (4:261), Kant nonetheless hoped that the shorter work would be used to assess the critical philosophy 'piece by piece from its foundation,' serving 'as a general synopsis, with which the work itself could then be compared on occasion." (Cambridge University Press). Grundlegung der Metaphysik der Sitten was Kant s first major work on Ethics. "Kant's most influential positions in moral philosophy are found in The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals but he developed, enriched, and in some cases modified those views in later works" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). "Kant's great achievement was to conclude finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and more comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy. The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas" (PMM). HBS 68562. $2,250.

Condition: Good. First. From the library of the Oldenburg Gymnasium (Gymnasium Zu Oldenburg). First edition, second issue with woodcut device to title, woodcut head-piece (angels) on p. 3, and woodcut tail-piece (rod with leaves). 8vo., 222, [2 (blank)] pp. Original binding is solid in the publisher's blue paste paper with red speckled edge stain. Paste paper has deteriorated from the spine and hinges. Interior pages are clean. Foxing is limited to just the end paper. For unknown reasons, a small 1x2 inch blank piece of contemporary paper is glued to the verso of the front free end paper. A respectably resilient copy of Kant's rebuttal to the critic's critiques of his Critique of Pure Reason. Octavo. Original binding in publisher's blue paste paper over boards.

Hardcover. Condition: Gut bis sehr gut. 1. Auflage. 21 x 12,5 cm, Pappband der Zeit mit Buntpapierbezug, handbeschriebenes Rückenschild, 222 Seiten, Holzschnitt-Titelvignette, Holzschnitt-Vignette (Engel) auf S.3 sowie Schlussvignette. 2. --- 21 x 12.5 cm, contemporary paperback with colored paper cover, hand-lettered spine label, 222 pages. First Impression, second issue. Some foxing throughout, otherwise a good copy of the rare first edition of the Prolegomena. In the Prolegomena Kant attempted to bring the essential aspects of his transcendental philosophy into a clear form and saw this work as a simplified presentation of his main work Kritik der reinen Vernunft (1781).

First edition, first printing. 8vo. 222, [2, blank] pp., woodcut vignette title page, woodcut head and tailpieces. Contemporary half calf with sprinkled paper covered boards, flat spine panelled with simple gilt rolls, second panel lettered in gilt on red paper label, the rest with attractive sunburst devices, red speckled edges, green silk bookmark (neat contemporary ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, small contemporary ink notation to title page, heavy foxing to outer leaves, with occasional intermittent foxing throughout, contents otherwise generally unmarked; some trivial rubbing to tips of spine and corners with just a hint of minor surface wear to covers, notwithstanding a really excellent copy). Riga, Johann Friedrich Hartknoch. An attractive copy of the rare correct first printing of the Prolegomena Towards a Future Metaphysics, written by Kant as a clarification of the Critique of Pure Reason, which he believed had been widely misunderstood on publication two years previously. It became one of Kant's most influential works and he incorporated much of it into the second edition of the Critique, itself now accepted as 'Kant's great achievement which concluded finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century' (PMM). Schopenhauer described the book as the 'finest and most comprehensible of Kant's principal works'. Three printings of the Prolegomena appeared in the same year, identifiable by the varying woodcut head and tailpieces. The present example is the correct first printing is with the floriated bar headpiece on page 3 (rather than the second and third printings that have the two cherubs headpiece - Warda 76 & 77) and the floriated bar on page 222 (rather than the bar with climbing leaves - Warda 76 - or a small ornamental piece with climbing flora - Warda 77). Finally, on page 78, line 8 the word ?subjektiv? appears rather than ?objektiv? ? which was corrected in the two later printings. The second and third printings are relatively common, no doubt with larger print runs on account of the commercial success of the book, but examples of the correct first printing are notably scarce. Warda, 75.

First edition, second issue, of Kant's slender introduction to his wider philosophical system. Kant wrote the Prolegomena after the publication of the Critique of Pure Reason (1781), which he believed to have been widely misunderstood. Yet the work is more than purely expository: as Peter Thielke notes, "the methods Kant adopts in this work are different from those he employs in the first Critique, and this opens up a novel perspective on what exactly critical idealism involves" (p. 2). Of the first edition's three issues, this second is identified by the angel vignette headpiece on page 3 and the garlanded rod tailpiece on page 222. Adickes 49; Warda 76. Peter Thielke, "Introduction", in Peter Thielke, ed., Kant's Prolegomena: A Critical Guide, 2023. Octavo (203 x 118 mm), pp. 222, [2]. Woodcut vignette to title page, head- and tailpiece, floral running-heads. Near-contemporary half sheep, early reback with original spine laid down, spine decorated and ruled in gilt, pale yellow calf spine label, marbled paper sides and endpapers, red edges. Light bumping and wear, minor loss to spine ends, infrequent browning to contents: a very good copy.
