Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Minor edge and corner wear; no dj; lightly scuffed and scratched; corners are gently bumped and rubbed; some light shelf wear; ex-library with the usual library markings; overall a nice used copy! Red boards with silver and black lettering on the spine. 67 historical and informative pages! "Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound is probably the most lyrical of the Greek classical tragedies. It is also the most un-dramatic - one man, a sort of demi-god at that, chained to a rock, orated to, and orating at, a sequence of embodied apparitions. In translation, the poetry seems lofty and dead, and the characters statues. Something living somehow burns through even the worst translation. I took one of the dullest I could find.".…

Robert Lowell's adaptation of "Prometheus Bound" (derived from Aeschylus) was first published in "The New York Review of Books" on July 13, 1967, before being published in book form by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1969. Lowell used an existing literal translation rather than translating from the ancient Greek, keeping the core plot and structure of Aeschylus intact while writing in prose instead of verse. By shifting to prose, Lowell toned down traditional poetic grandiloquence to make the speeches feel more direct, austere, and psychologically raw. He avoided modern-day gimmicks—there are no political caricatures, no contemporary military gear, and no anachronistic slang. Lowell noted that his own anxieties and the political tensions of his era naturally "seep in" through the tone and idiom of the dialogue. …

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. First Impression of Lowell's "free, rather politicized translation of Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound." (Literary Encyclopedia) Slim crown 8vo (200 x 117mm): vi,[2],67,[1]pp. Publisher's rose cloth, spine lettered in gilt; white typographic dust jacket printed in French blue. A splendid example, virtually pristine (apparently unread), very tightly bound and clean and bright throughout. Not in Mazzaro. "In 1965 Lowell protested the Vietnam War by publicly refusing President Johnson's invitation to a White House Festival of the Arts, just as he had declined the draft twenty-two years before. [Lowell served five months in West Street jail, in New York, and federal prison at Danbury, Connecticut, after refusing to serve in the army when he was inducted in 1943.] Again there was a brouhaha, and again Lowell briefly became a public figure, admired by war protesters and reviled by war supporters. He spent the next years actively involved in anti-war protests, such as the 1967 March on the Pentagon, and in aiding Senator Eugene McCarthy's 1968 Presidential candidacy. Lowell also published a series of anti-war works," including this translation. (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
