This book presents an expressive and thoughtful collection of poetic proverbs, summarized with thoughtful commentary that makes their language and ideas relatable to contemporary readers. The author's intent in collecting these proverbs was to capture the collective wisdom of the English language in order to improve the moral character of young readers, particularly those who may not be attracted to religious instruction. As such, the work should be understood not as a religious text, but as a literary one that emphasizes moral character rather than doctrine. Many of the proverbs are probably recognizable to readers, but the author's commentary offers a new perspective on each, prompting thoughtful reflection that extends beyond a simple understanding of the proverb itself. For example, "Opportunity makes the Thief" isn't just recorded as an observation on the human condition; the commentary expands on this by relating it to the idea that all property would be safe if everyone was honest. The author wrote this collection during a period of profound social change. This book presents a unique and valuable opportunity to appreciate time-honored wisdom through the lens of a gifted 18th-century social commentator. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Proverbs in poetical form with accompanying illustrations by John Bewick, designed to appeal to children. John Bewick was the brother of the celebrated naturalist and engraver Thomas, and he provided the artwork for several of Trusler's publications over a lengthy period in the late eighteenth century. "Proverbs in Verse" was a revised text of "Proverbs Exemplified" which was published by Trusler in 1790 and is one of the earliest known books of illustrated proverbs for children; the revised work still used the John Bewick illustrations and incorporates in addition five cuts borrowed from "The Progress of Man and Society", a new proverb, and a new cut of the Good Samaritan (presumably produced for the original but unused) as well as an additional nine vignettes. By publication in 1817 John had died, and though he was named as the artist in the original publication, "Proverbs in Verse" was published without accreditation for his illustrations.
