A clean, tight copy in a MYLAR PROTECTIVE COVER."From the uniquely rich and varied collection of children's literature in the Library of Congress, here is a rich sampling of writings and illustrations created for young readers in America from colonial times to 1900. They are reproduced here - many in facsimile - from the originals, some of which are extremely rare." PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED in black & white and color drawings, paintings and etchings. "The works also speak for themselves, as generous passages, and even complete books, are included. Taken together, they provide a unique insight into what adults of that era felt most worthy of imparting to young minds, of passing on to the future; they are thus a sort of "time capsule," a fascinating segment of social history, as well as a vigorous and varied body of writing for children." 466 pages. NOTE: Due to the large size and heavy weight of the book significant additional shipping cost will be requested/required for OUT-OF-U.S. shipment in accordance with country of destination.

Soft cover. Condition: Fair. "For the Sake of a Name, a Story for Our Time", by Elizabeth Grinnell, was published in the "New Sabbath Library' series (No. 26) by David C. Cook in Elgin, Illinois in 1900. This is the First Edition, published in an oversize, paper format. The book is fragile, and its condition is, over all, rather rough. The rear cover is entirely taken up with a promotional ad for the "Young People's Weekly", The cover is printed in various shades of ultramarine (blue). Sarah Elizabeth Pratt Grinnell (1851 - 1935) was a Pasadena writer, naturalist and club woman. She was one of the founding members of the Audubon Club, and wrote several books on natural history themes, as well as a few novels. Her best known book was "Gold Hunting in Alaska" (published as told by her zoologist son, Joseph Grinnell, and edited by her). "For the Sake of a Name" was written entirely by her. It was issued as No. 26 of the "New Sabbath Library " series by Publisher David C. Cook. This paper-bound copy, published in 1900, is the First Edition. SERIES : New Sabbath Library (No. 26) TITLE : For the Sake of a Name, a Story for Our Time AUTHOR : Elizabeth Grinnell ( Sarah Elizabeth Pratt Grinnell, 1851 - 1935) IMPRINT : David C. Printed in various shades of ultramarine (blue). CONDITION -- FAIR ONLY -- This is a previously owned book, that has seen considerable use, and which shows that use, being fragile . with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR - Spine is rough, with small stains and missing portions of the over-lying paper. Splitting is obvious on the joints.General weathering and staining (most obvious on the covers along the spine and at the fore-edge of the front cover. There are a few small edge tears. Text-block edges are darkened. With all that, I must point out that both the front and rear covers display adequately. BINDING - Holding - the book is fragile, but no leaves are detached or loose. Care should be taken when handling. INTERIOR - There are two ownership stamps (of the same name) at the head of the first page, else the interior is free of writing and free of marking.
