In a dust jacket clipped bu with the $2 figure partially present at the top of the inside front flap. The jacket is very good with a touch of wear to the top and bottom of the spine. Robert Lawson (1892 1957) was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. His work was widely admired, and he became the first, and so far only, person to be given both the Caldecott Medal, for They Were Strong and Good (1941), and a Newbery Award, for Rabbit Hill (1945). First Edition with matching dates of 1944 on the title and copyright pages and "Published September 1944" on the copyright page. 1st Edition with "First published September 1944" on the copyright page.

Robert Lawson was both author and illustrator of "Rabbit Hill," for which he won a Newbery Award. Written and released at the end of WWII, this title is a clever parable for U.S. involvement in aiding war-torn countries.

Hardcover. First Edition. Near fine in printed cloth covered boards with blue text on the spine. A small quarto of 9 1/4 by 6 inches with illustrated end sheets. There is a dated, Christmas 1944, gift inscription on the verso side of the first free end page. In a very good, unclipped first state dust jacket without the John Newberry Medal seal with two long closed tears which have been repaired using archival tape on the verso side of the jacket and with rubbing and wear to the ends of the spine area and at the fore corners of the panels. Signed by the author without an inscription or date on the fly title page. 128 pages of text with illustrations throughout from the iconic drawings of Robert Lawson. The winner of the John Newbery Medal for 1944. The title for this book comes from the name the author gave to his home in Westport, Connecticut. A very handsome, signed copy which is scarce in this condition.
First edition with war time paper; 1945 Newbery Medal Winner; small 4to.; illustrated cloth covered boards with illustrated endpapers, hardcover; 128 pages; black and white illustrations; envelope glued to back endpaper with a letter from Robert Lawson to the mother of a young fan who had visited Rabbit Hill. He enclosed a photograph of St. Francis since the child was unable to take a photo of him and describes the statue. Letter is dated and Signed by Lawson, Nov. 21, 1945; the boards are foxed and corners lightly bumped else very good but lacking the dust jacket.
