Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. (xviii) 146pp plus central section of colour plate illustrations. 12mo/ Signed and inscribed by the author. Burgundy boards with gilt titles, in laminated pictorial dust jacket. As new condition throughout out. DJ now protected in mylar wrapper. Lady Anne Blencowe's receipt book offers an important historical insight into the kitchen and stillroom of a society lady of the late 17th century. The original cannot be found but a reproduction in the 1920s ensured the collection survived. The recipes have been adapted to give modern readers the opportunity to re-create original 17th century dishes. This 2004 edition itself is now very hard to fine and, in my experience, unique in such fine condition.

[.]"; (July) He acknowledges receipt of "certain documents relating to Rowton Houses [.] giving me what will be very useful in my new project ." Note: His new project would be philanthropic, given the function of Rowton Houses: "Rowton Houses was a chain of hostels built in London, England, by the Victorian philanthropist Lord Rowton to provide decent accommodation for working men in place of the squalid lodging houses of the time.George Orwell, in his 1933 book Down and Out in Paris and London, wrote about lodging houses:The best are the Rowton Houses, where the charge is a shilling, for which you get a cubicle to yourself, and the use of excellent bathrooms. You can also pay half a crown for a 'special', which is practically hotel accommodation. The Rowton Houses are splendid buildings, and the only objection to them is the strict discipline, with rules against cooking, card playing, etc [.]" SEE WIKIPEDIA and image.

Rectangular small 8vo, (8" x 5"), split calf, receipt book 1801 written on cover some faded writing on other cover, about 85 leaves. Top cover detached, rear almost detached, covers worn, small pasted label on pastedown, a few pages slightly loose, some aging and browning, and a little staining, but internally very good overall. Interesting early Rhode Island business receipt book for the Jacob Whitman & Co. Based in Providence, Whitman appears to be an auctioneer. Consignors used Whitman to sell a broad range of items, including tobacco, tea, old cloths, chairs, soap and even chocolate. Most of the writing is legible (some more than others), and many consignors signed the book to acknowledge receipt of payment. There are about 85 leaves, and information is recorded on both sides of the page.
