Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Wang, Chi-Ch'ien (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, 1996. Inscribed by the artist in a thick black ink hand, "To [?] James, C. C. Wang, March 10, 1996." This is a stapled paperback pamphlet with glossy colored wrappers. Slightly oblong, 9.5 x 10.5 inches. Unbumped spine head and tail, and sharp corners. Exceptionally clean binding. With 28 numbered pages, including numerous color plates, 14 of which are full-page and five of which are double-page spreads, plus two B&W double-page spreads. There is also an essay on the artist and his work by the estimable James Cahill. Slipped-in addendum included. A Fine copy. 8 oz. This is an exhibition catalogue devoted to the "late period" work of Wang Chi-Ch'ien, better known as C. C. Wang, for an exhibition of February 7 - July 7, 1996 at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Wang [1907-2003] was a Chinese-born artist and art collector based in New York City. His collection of ancient Chinese paintings is consistently listed as one of the greatest collections in the world. In 1998, 25 paintings from his collection were given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Examples of his own earlier paintings are the last authentic examples of "literati art" from China. Several expatriates practiced the style after the Chinese Communist Revolution, but he was the last to die of those who practiced it, and the style was not permitted immediately after the revolution. Subsequent generations had no one to pass the style onto, and so it died out with the few expatriates practicing abroad, like Wang. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Flat-signed by Kelley on front endpage. Front cover is heavily creased, bottom corner is bumped, pages unmarked. 56 page art exhibition catalog. "Kelley's brand of success is his ability to translate the sensuous moment of discovery into an approximation on paint-covered canvas. His working method is to go out into the countryside and work up small canvases on site, along with sketches and photos, and then return to the studio with his trove for further refinement. There he may work up the smaller canvases, or use them and the photos as memory guides to get a start on larger and perhaps more complex renditions. Then the heavy lifting begins. The large canvases challenge and inspire because of the conceptual challenges the artist sets himself. The complex mesmerizing patterning and infinitude of subtle and transcendent color, which charcterize Kelley's finest, paintings - that shout for pure joy - are actually the result of hard concerted work.
