Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First U.S. edition, 1st printing. 326pp. includes 27 b&w images, acknowledgements, interviews & index. First published in Great Britain in 2014 by Skyscraper Publications Ltd. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Fine condition. Erstwhile remainder has no ma…rkings, wear or tears; quite intact & presentable. "Actor, doctor, sculptor, TV personality, director of both film and opera--Sir Jonathan Miller's career covers a vast range of artistic endeavors and intellectual pursuits. Common amongst all of these trades, though, is Miller's exceptional talent for writing about them. Because his work has been published in locations as numerous and diverse as his interests, ON FURTHER REFLECTION is the necessary gathering-together of excerpts from Miller's best and most memorable pieces from the last six decades, and serves as a staggering indicator of the depth and variety of his preoccupations. [] The collection features his writing on mesmerism and neurology, art history and drama; it contains thoughts on how we interact with our own bodies, and how television changed in the wake of the Kennedy assassination. For each extract he provides a small introduction, placing the writing in the context of his work in the arts and sciences. Miller casts light on many oft-overlooked aspects of the world, and reminds us with his trademark wit and perception that to this day he is a unique presence on the cultural scene. [] A celebration of one of our finest minds, ON FURTHER REFLECTION brings together the best of Jonathan Miller for the first time in one collection." [jacket copy] "Jonathan Miller is someone whose passionate and agile mind takes all of human behavior as its subject. He is as playful and full of humor as he is serious and profound. Miller is equally at home with physiology, philosophy, and psychology, and what he has to say is always insightful. ON FURTHER REFLECTION is dazzling from beginning to end."--Oliver Sacks. Fine hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in an intact-as-new jacket.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Reprint. From the publisher: "How can we tell the difference between a reflection and the real thing? How does a reflection betray its identity? Why is it that when we look at a mirror we can see either our reflection or the mirror but not both at the same time? How and wh…en do we learn to recognize our own reflection? What does a reflective surface look like and how can we distinguish it from a non-reflective surface? Why is it that certain paintings may be turned upside down and still be visually acceptable? How are the various qualities of reflection represented in art - from the diffuse sheen of burnished copper to the realism of silvered glass? In this innovative book, published to accompany the exhibition Mirror Image at the National Gallery, London, Jonathan Miller discusses these puzzling questions and investigates the pictorial representation of reflection - 'sheen, shine, glimmer and gleam' - through a wonderfully varied selection of paintings and photographs, covering nine centuries, drawn from the National Gallery and other international collections." Sir Jonathan Miller CBE (1934 2019) was an English theater and opera director, actor, author, television presenter, humorist and physician. After training in medicine and specializing in neurology in the late 1950s, he came to prominence in the early 1960s in the comedy revue Beyond the Fringe with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Alan Bennett. He began directing operas in the 1970s. His 1982 production of a "Mafia"-styled Rigoletto was set in 1950s Little Italy, Manhattan. In its early days, he was an associate director at the National Theatre. He later ran the Old Vic Theatre. As a writer and presenter of more than a dozen BBC documentaries, Miller became a television personality and public intellectual in Britain and the United States. This copy is fine in dark green cloth with gilt titles on the spine. No marks or damage. The unclipped DJ is also excellent. Signed on the half title page with a quote "occasional absurdity is the price you pay for occasional epiphany" BI19.
