Add to basket8vo, pp. [xvi], 295; an attractive copy in contemporary panelled calf, spine nicely gilt, with morocco label (upper joint cracked). Fourth edition: first published in 1699, with a reissue in 1700, and a new edition later that same year. Thomas Baker (1656-1740) was a non-juror whose attitude to learning was coloured by his sense of its inadequacy: he believed that revelation was the only safe guide to salvation. As his biographer in new DNB points out, the book was touched a chord among contemporary readers, as it went through eight editions before 1760. Baker is well known to collectors of old books, too, because after his expulsion from St John's College Cambridge in 1717 (he having refused to take the oath of abjuration), whenever he wrote his name in one of his books, he added 'Coll: Jo: socius ejectus'.
