Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Lyttelton was Gladstone's private secretary during three of his terms as prime minister. The recipient Arthur George Liddon Rogers (1864-1944, son of the editor of the economist Thorold Rogers) is not named, but the item is from his papers, and was written while he was Secretary of the Liberal Publication Department, a position to which he was appointed in November 1891. 2pp, 12mo. Signed 'Spencer Lyttleton.' In good condition, lightly aged and folded for postage. Begins: 'Dear Sir / I am afraid I cannot ask Mr Gladstone again to sit for his photograph according to your suggestion in the letter to Mr H. Gladstone [the prime minister's son Herbert]. It is a process he particularly dislikes, & the moment is specially unfavourable as it was only yesterday that he was taken by Messrs. Valentine.' As 'most admirable portaits' of Gladstone 'exist & can very easily be procured', Lyttelton does not see the necessity of another. He concludes: 'Your photographer is quite at liberty to take what views he wishes of the Castle & grounds.'.

Unbound. Condition: Very Good. Single octavo leaf. Old folds, one corner chipped affecting no text, very good. A bill submitted by "Miss M. Lewis, M.D." for $15 for two months of treatment for Amos Howard. Filed on the same day by the County Clerk on the verso. Below that is written, over a month later: "Seward. June 28, 1882, Not allowed By order of Co. Com. G. W. Learned, Chair." Amos Howard was a farmer and Civil War veteran in his 50s; Learned was indeed County Commissioner (and surprisingly, a published poet), but try as we might we can't seem to find out anything definitive about Dr. Lewis.
Condition: Very Good. Typed Letter signed (presumably by autopen). Original envelope mostly present -- the right end is gone (probably torn off when opened). The letter is addressed to Leo L. Orenstein, who appears to have been a Clinical professor of Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine for over 60 years who resided at 955 Park Avenue in Manhattan. Orenstein apparently wrote to Senator Kennedy to complain that some of his neighbors were not then represented in Congress as a result of the House actions taken against Powell. New York's Junior Senator responds that he thinks all members of the House and Senate should be subject to a set of ethical standards adopted and applied equally to all members of Congress and that Powell should have been judged by such standards (which did not then exist). He also regrets that Powell did not respond to the set of questions put to him by the Select Committee investigating Powell. That paragraph ends vaguely ". I feel confident that the necessary legal actions will be taken on any violations which have occurred.".
