Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Manuscript of 83 leaves of this FrenchBunda dictionary, probably unpublished and unsigned. This manuscript is certainly the first FrenchBunda vocabulary (cf. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. Folio (19½ x 13 in.: 495 x 340 mm). Engraved frontispiece and eighteen engraved leaves, nineteen leaves in all. Allegorical border on title-page signed by Andreas Reinhard, after Claus von Moinichen and Michael August Rog, fine equestrian portrait in a command-of-hand calligraphic… style, each page within an elaborate border consisting of floral sprays, flowers, peacocks, parrots, elephants and other animals, or of Renaissance ornament incorporating fish, seals, narwhals, bears, stags, horses and other Danish motifs. Contemporary Danish calf, two gilt floral borders; slightly rubbed, top and bottom of spine worn, but an excellent copy. FIRST EDITION of the "King's Law," establishing absolute monarchy in Denmark. Edited by F. Rostgaard. Also included here is the proclamation of 4 September 1709 announcing the publication of the law. On 14 November 1665, Frederik III consolidated his power over a weakened Danish nobility by promulgating the Kongelov, or "King's Law," which carried absolutism to its extreme. This magnificent edition was published by Frederick Ill more than forty years after the promulgation. The engravings are by Andreas Reinhardt (1676-1742), a German artist who worked in Copenhagen, after the designs of the Danish artist Moinchen. The calligraphic text is by M.A. Roeg (1679-1737), a calligrapher of Norwegian origin, who later became medal engraver to Louis XV. He is probably the artist responsible for the fine calligraphic portrait of Frederick III. The text of Lex Regia was edited by Schumacher, Frederick's private secretary. The Lex Regia was printed in an edition of only five hundred copies. PROVENANCE: Robert S Pirie.

pp. x, 349, (i). Woodcut initials and tailpieces throughout. Original red morocco presentation binding, ornately blind-stamped with decorative gilt lettering and central crown to both covers, ornately gilt and dated spine signed JL [JOHN LEIGHTON], bevelled boards, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, the spine is rubbed along the ed…ges, also the lower corners and patches along the board edges, overall a good copy. *Dedicated to Queen Victoria and illustrated with a cut of the Victoria Regia, the Great Water Lily of America [Amazonia regia]. Emily Fathfull's Preface describes the setting up of the Society for Promoting the Industrial Employment of Women and the Victoria Press. Much of the content is original work by Tennyson, Allingham, Lowell, Meredith and Thackeray, Trollope, Amelia Edwards, Anna Watts, Matthew Arnold amongst others. Emily Faithfull joined the Langham Place Circle, composed of like-minded women such as Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon, Bessie Rayner Parkes, Jessie Boucherett, Emily Davies, and Helen Blackburn. The Langham Place Circle advocated for legal reform in women's status (including suffrage), wider employment possibilities, and improved educational opportunities for girls and women. Although Faithfull identified with all three aspects of the group's aims, her primary areas of interest centered on advancing women's employment opportunities. The Circle was responsible for forming the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women in 1859. With the object of extending women's sphere of labour, which was then very limited, in 1860 Emily Faithfull set up in London a printing establishment for women, called The Victoria Press. From 1860 until 1864, it published the feminist English Woman's Journal. Both Faithfull and her Victoria Press soon obtained a reputation for its excellent work, and Faithfull was shortly afterwards appointed printer and publisher in ordinary to Queen Victoria. In 1863 she began the publication of a monthly, Victoria Magazine, in which for eighteen years she continuously and earnestly advocated the claims of women to remunerative employment. In January 1864 she published the first annual report of the Ladies' London Emancipation Society and she went on to publish other works on behalf of this society. In 1868 she published a novel, Change upon Change. She also appeared as a lecturer, and, with the object of furthering the interests of women, lectured widely and successfully both in England and the United States, which latter she visited in 1872 and 1882. She was a member of the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women. She considered compositor's work (a comparatively lucrative trade of the time) to be a possible mode of employment for women to pursue. This was opposed by the London Printer's Union, which was open only to men and claimed that women lacked the requisite intelligence and physical skill. See WIKIPEDIA.

Folio. [48], 1009, [123], 310, [14] p. Title page in red and black and with a device, engraved portrait frontis., numerous decorative initial letters and head and tail pieces. Latin text. [Our copy without dedication leaf inserted after main title page and errata leaf inserted after signature Q3q8], age toning, dampstain to lead…ing corner with some subsequent wrinkling, ex.-libris Ralph V Westwood, later marbled e.ps., inner gilt dentelles with double gilt rule, edges of boards with gilt fillet, early C19th calf with triple gilt rule edged boards, gilt armorial device of the Baronetcy of Borough in gilt to boards, some minor marking and wear to boards, corners repaired, rebacked with gilt tooling and gilt lettered label to spine. STC (2nd. ed.) / 19210; ESTC S115363 'Based on an earlier work by Roger of Wendover also known as "Flores historiarum", probably based in turn on an earlier St. Albans chronicle. See Richard Vaughan "Matthew Paris" (Cambridge, 1958). Edited by Matthew Parker. Title page in red and black. The first leaf bears half-title, "Matthi Parisiensis opera", on recto and portrait of the author, signed "T. Cecill sculp:", on verso. "Vitæ duorum Offarum . et viginti trium abbatum Sancti Albani" most of it probably not written by Paris, has separate title page, register and pagination; the imprint reads "Londini, excudebat Milo Flesher M.DC.XXXIX. .". "Matthi Parisiensis additamenta" has separate title page dated 1639 with Flesher's name in imprint; pagination and register are continuous.''This edition of Matthew Paris's Chronica Majora, the first to appear under the above title, was originally intended to be a third reprint of Archbiship Matthew Parker's First printed edition of 1571 however, the editor, Dr William Watts, who was chaplain to Prince Rupert, corrected many of Parker's inaccuraries and added various readings, a glossary and index. Much of the Chronica (Up to 1236) was copied or adapted from the work of Roger of Wendover, Matthew's predecessor as historiographer at St. Albans Abbey, and other chroniclers. From 1236 to 1259 Matthew wrote within a year or so of the events he described and provides the most detailed record of events of all mediaeval English chronicles. It was first translated into English in 1852-4. US$965.

No place, Sumptibus regiis, (Leyde, Bonaventura et Abraham Elzevier) 1649. (2), 720 pp. 12mo. 19th-century calf, gilt floral ornaments on sides, spine gilt with gilt lettering, gilt inside dentelles, all edges gilt, binding signed at foot of spine: Bozerian jeune. Lalanne, Dictionnaire Historique de la France, vol. ii, p. 1637;…Willems 658; Graesse, Tresor des Livres Rares et Precieux, vi, 249; not in BMSTC, French Books 1601-1700. One of various editions published in the year as its original publication in folio which was also published by the Elzeviers, and often reprinted. This is the work by which Salmasius is best remembered. It does not appear by whose influence he was induced to undertake the Defensio Regia, but Charles II defrayed the expense of printing, and presented the author with £ 100. The work provoked the famous reply by Milton Pro populo Anglicano defensio, contre Claudii anonymi, alias Salmasii, defensionem regiam. 'Claude Saumaise (1588-1658), l'un des plus célèbres érudits et critiques du XVIIe siècle. Il embrassa le protestantisme, alla s'établir à Leyde (1631), où il succéda comme professeur à Joseph Scaliger. Appelé en Suède par Christine, près de laquelle il séjourna un an, il retourna en Hollande. Sa réputation était immense parmi ses contemporains .' (Lalanne, op.cit). - Very nice copy in a binding by Bozerian the Younger.
