Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. EXTRAORDINARILY SCARCE SIGNED! FIRST EDITION, first printing. Full number line present. Book is brand new and unread. Personally hand signed by imminent British historian Andrew Roberts directly to Mount Vernon Historical Society bookplate. The irony of a British writer, writing about King George III and having signed the book at the former home of the man most responsible for our Independence from him and his country never ceases to amaze me! Just a great book and a rare and special copy. Dust jacket hand covered in protective archival grade Mylar for many worry free years of reading/collecting! From the New York Times bestselling author of Churchill and Napoleon The last king of America, George III, has been ridiculed as a complete disaster who frittered away the colonies and went mad in his old age. The truth is much more nuanced and fascinating--and will completely change the way readers and historians view his reign and legacy. Most Americans dismiss George III as a buffoon--a heartless and terrible monarch with few, if any, redeeming qualities. The best-known modern interpretation of him is Jonathan Groff's preening, spitting, and pompous take in Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway masterpiece. But this deeply unflattering characterization is rooted in the prejudiced and brilliantly persuasive opinions of eighteenth-century revolutionaries like Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, who needed to make the king appear evil in order to achieve their own political aims. After combing through hundreds of thousands of pages of never-before-published correspondence, award-winning historian Andrew Roberts has uncovered the truth: George III was in fact a wise, humane, and even enlightened monarch who was beset by talented enemies, debilitating mental illness, incompetent ministers, and disastrous luck. In The Last King of America, Roberts paints a deft and nuanced portrait of the much-maligned monarch and outlines his accomplishments, which have been almost universally forgotten. Two hundred and forty-five years after the end of George III's American rule, it is time for Americans to look back on their last king with greater understanding: to see him as he was and to come to terms with the last time they were ruled by a monarch. Hardcover. Condition: Very good condition. Fourth edition. Trials of pirate Captain Kidd, and New York colonial politician Nicholas Bayard, complete in itself. Captain William Kidd (c.1654 1701) was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy, although some modern historians note that relegating him to the role of pirate and putting him on trial was a maneuver used by politicians of the day to deflect attention from their own questionable roles in privateering. Here Kidd testifies that he has French passes, which would have provided proof that he worked as a privateer and not a pirate: "I beg your Lordship's Patience till I can procure my Papers. I had a Couple of French Passes, which I must make use of in order to my Justification" (p287). Kidd was not allowed to retrieve his papers; he was found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy) and sentenced to death. (pp287-339). In 1910 at the British Public Records archives, the French passes were found that Captain Kidd claimed would prove his innocence. The second trial of note included here is that of Colonel Nicholas Bayard, p419-440. Bayard, the 16th mayor of New York City, was accused in 1702 of high treason before Chief Justice William Atwood, on the basis of a remonstrance signed by him and others, considered to be libelous. Bayard was sentenced to death, but after the death of the New York governor and the corrupt Chief Justice, the proceedings were annulled, and Bayard's property and name were cleared. Volume 5 of 6 volumes. Folio, 852pp (text printed in 2 columns, each numbered as if a separate page). Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library, with their stamp on the title page. Pale green cloth with leather gilt spine labels, and paper label. Spine slightly sunned, labels chipped . OCLC: 1360856.

Hardcover. First edition, second printing. This 1952 official biography of King George V is inscribed by his widow, Queen Mary, to Clive Wigram, the man who had served her husband for his entire reign, lastly as Private Secretary to the Sovereign.Queen Mary's inscription is inked in blue in seven lines on the front free endpaper recto: "To | Clive Wigram | in remembrance | of many happy | days from | Mary R | 1952 " The volume is the first edition, second printing, published in August 1952, the same month as the first printing. Condition is very good. The dark blue cloth binding is square, tight, clean, and bright with sharp corners. We note only a few trivial blemishes, light shelf wear to extremities, and a slight hint of outward warp to the front cover. The contents are respectably bright, with light spotting appearing confined to the endpapers and the fore and bottom edges of the text block. The blue topstain is just a bit dulled. The sole previous ownership mark other than Queen Mary's inscription is the tiny, printed bookseller ticket of "HUGH REES LTD | 47 PALL MALL. | LONDON S.W.1." affixed to the lower right front pastedown.Mary, Princess of Teck (1867-1953) wed George Frederick Ernest Albert in May 1893. When he ascended the throne in 1910, Mary became Queen Mary of Great Britain and Ireland, and the British dominions beyond the seas, and empress of India, consort of George V. George V was a second son; Mary had been supposed to wed his older brother, Prince Albert Victor, to whom she was engaged when he died of illness in 1892. Second sons would define two generations of the monarchy. When George V died in 1936, her eldest son ascended the throne which he would famously abdicate for an American divorcee after a reign of just 325 days. Mary's second son, crowned George VI, reigned until his death in February 1952, just half a year before this biography of his father was published. Mary did not long survive either her son or publication of this book; she died in March 1953.Clive Wigram, 1st. Baron Wigram GCB, GCVO, CSI, PC (1873-1960) was a British soldier and court official who served as Private Secretary to the Sovereign from 1931-1936 the final years of the reign of George V and his Queen consort, Mary. Wigram had been in the King's service since the beginning of the King's reign. "Upon the accession ofGeorge Vin 1910, he exchanged a promising military career to be equerry and assistant private secretary to the king. Sporty and down-to-earth, with chauvinist views typical of many army officers,Wigramsuited the king's taste for simplicity and directness in his aides. Tall, handsome, and athletic, he was the model of the soldierly courtier." In the King's service, Wigram rose to both Private Secretary to the Sovereign and to the peerage. "It was toWigramthatGeorge Vspoke his dying words, asking about the state of the empire."The author of this biography of George V, Sir Harold George Nicolson (1886-1968), was a diplomat and politician as well as a writer. Arguably his most important political contributions were made in the mid-1930's, when Winston Churchill and a handful of fellow "anti-appeasers" sought to rouse Britain to the threat of a rising Nazi Germany. "Although he was perhaps not made for the cut and thrust of party politics,Nicolsonwas one of the best-informed speakers on foreign affairs in the longparliamentof 1935, warning early and consistently of the dangers of appeasement." By the time he wrote this book, Nicolson's political career was, to his chagrin, behind him and "apart from broadcasting, he channeled his prodigious energies into writing. In 1948 he was commissioned to write the official biography ofGeorge Van awkward assignment skillfully executed; it was published four years later and confirmed his high reputation as a writer. It also earned him a knighthood as KCVO and an honorary fellowship of Balliol (both 1953).".

He served on the committees concerning tillage (13 Dec. 1597), lewd and wandering persons (20 Dec.), costs in civil lawsuits 27 Jan. 1598, and on two conferences with the Lords 16 Jan. (on defence) and 3 Feb. (on wine casks). He was probably the 'Mr. George Cooke' who was appointed to the committee on tellers and receivers on 12 Dec.2 Croke began reporting law cases in 1581, and is mentioned as an advocate in his own reports in 1588. He established a lucrative practice and built up estates in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. He was associated with the Hampden family, was named as overseer in the will of William Hampden and must have known John Hampden for whom he later gave judgment in the ship-money case. Croke's marriage 'fell out unexpected to his friends that conceived a purpose in him never to have married', she being some 20 years of age and he 'an ancient bachelor'. Croke's law reports, published after his death in a translation from the law French by Harbottle Grimston his son-in-law, soon occupied a considerable place in the authoritative literature of the common law. The 12 active years which he spent on the King's bench coincided with some of the great constitutional cases of the century. He is best remembered in connexion with ship-money. In 1637 Charles submitted the question to the judges, all of whomsave for Croke and Sir Richard Huttonagreed that the King could demand such financial aid from his subjects in time of danger. The two dissidents signed this general statement in the belief that they were bound to yield to the majority opinion. However, when the problem came before him judicially in the Hampden case, he made an outright statement declaring that there was no precedent for such a prosecution and that only Parliament might set a charge upon a subject. 'The King has ship money by hook but not by Croke', said the wits. In 1641 Croke retired, retaining the title, salary and allowances of a judge. He died at Waterstock 16 Feb. 1642, leaving two wills, the first being concerned with the disposal of land to his wife and son Thomas. In the second, made 1640 and proved 3 May 1642, he asked to be buried without 'heraldry', hearse or any 'unnecessary ceremonies'. The widow was appointed sole executrix.

KING GEORGE V (1865-1936). King George V was King of Great Britain and the British Empire from 1910 to his death. ALS. 1 pg. 6 x 8. March 9, 1895. Windsor Castle. An autograph letter signed George on Windsor Castle letterhead accepting an invitation from Sir Frederick: I shall have much pleasure in coming to the Royal Academy dinner on Saturday 4th of May. I kept that night free as I thought it would be the night of your banquetGeorge. At this time, George was second in the line of succession behind his grandmother Queen Victoria, who would reign until 1901, and his father King Edward VII, whose short reign would end in 1910 and see George crowned King George V. Sir Frederick refers to Lord Frederic Leighton, an artist and pioneer in the New Sculpture movement serving as President of the Royal Academy since 1878. This would be his final banquet, as he would die suddenly the next year. The letter is faded at the bottom, but this does not hinder comprehension and is in otherwise very good condition.

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. This original 15 June 1716 document signed by Britain s King George I authorizes reimbursement for care given to prisoners in the wake of the Jacobite rising of 1715, which asserted the right of the Stuarts to the throne over the Hanoverians, of which King George I was the first. The document is a single sheet of laid, watermarked paper measuring 15.75 x 12.75 inches, folded to form four 7.875 x 12.75 inches panels. The first panel features the King s order prominently signed by him "George R" at the head of the document. The document is further signed at the foot "By His Majesty s Command" by "Wm Pulteney" the future 1st Earl of Bath who was then serving as Secretary of War. The document is addressed at the lower left to "Henry Earl of Lincoln, Pay Master Generall of Our Guards, Garrisons & Land Forces in Great Britain and Forces abroad." The document orders the Earl of Lincoln to "Pay unto John Mulcaster Agent and Sollicitor for transacting the Affairs of the Rebell Prisons the sum of Six hundred Ninety Two Pounds Three Shillings and Five Pence to be paid over to Lt. Col. Solomon Rapin in satisfaction of the like Summ disburs d by him in Nurses, Medicines and other necessary Contingencys for the use of the Rebell Prisoners at the several Places they are kept from the 14th of Nov. 1715 to the 30th of Aprill 1716." The inconclusive Battle of Sheriffmuir had taken place on 13 November 1715. The document was executed "at Our Court at St. James s this 15. Day of June 1716. In the Second Year of Our Reign."The document bears three horizontal folds, ostensibly where it was folded and sealed for original transmittal to Henry Earl of Lincoln. On the second panel is written the name "John Mulcaster". The first and second sections of the upper fourth panel were obviously, from the soiling and writing thereon, the outer folded portions of the document when it was transmitted. Horizontally on the second section of the upper fourth panel, is written: "Warrant for. 692.3.5. to Mr. John Mulcaster in satisfaction of the like Summ Disburs d by Lt. Col. Sol. Rapin, in Nurses Medicines sec. for the Rebell Prisoners from 14th. Nov. 1715. To 30th. Aprill 1716." all above the date "June 16th. 1716". Condition is very good overall. The document is all but complete, with only fractional loss to the lower right corner, two tiny holes at the intersection of vertical and horizontal folds, and a short closed tear and minor associated loss at the upper right corner of the rear panel. The document shows light overall soiling and spotting, the soiling heavy only on the upper rear panel which served as the outer faces when the document was originally folded for transmittal. The future King George I was born Georg Ludwig in Hanover, perhaps not an obvious route to the British throne. However, "the death in July 1700 of theduke of Gloucesterreopened the question of the English succession That successor had to be a Protestant no Roman Catholic would have been considered and ofStuartdescent, a combination which automatically excluded over fifty claimants with a closer hereditary claim." The person who united these qualifications wasGeorg s mother, Sophia (1630-1714), youngest daughter of Frederick V of the Palatinate, Winter King of Bohemia, and of Elizabeth, daughter of James I of England. When he signed this document, King George I (1660 1727) had only recently assumed the throne of Great Britain and Ireland ten months earlier, in August 1715. The Jacobite cause, pressed unsuccessfully upon his enthronement, would be pressed with rebellious force of arms again in 1745, also to no avail. The Hanoverian period was remarkably stable, not least because of the longevity of its monarchs. "From 1714 through to 1901, there were only sixmonarchs, one of whom, George III, remains the longest reigning king in British History. Queen Victoria then surpassed her grandfather in both age and length of reign. The period was also one of political stability, and the development. Signed by Author(s).
